Twenty-One

"YOU GUYS ARE SUCH A DISASTER."

David huffed in annoyance when those words slipped out of Riley's mouth.

They're on FaceTime right now, and so far, David was starting to regret calling his best friend. The man wasn't much of a help anyway.

"Gaano katagal na uli kayo hindi nagpapansinan?" Tanong nito.

"I don't know... a few days, I guess?"

Riley stifled his laugh. "Hindi ko alam na ganyan na pala kayo ka-close ni Warren. May tampuhan pa kayong nalalaman."

"Pissed off, Riley." David flipped him off.

"What...?" Natatawa nitong tanong. "Ganon naman talaga ang dating sa 'kin. Ang malalala 'nga, para kayong bagong kasal na nagkakapaan ng ugali."

Mabilis na tumalim ang mga tingin ni David kay Riley. "Ewan ko sayo, gago! Hindi ko alam bakit pa kita tinawag-tawagan. Bahala ka 'nga diyan."

David lifted his index finger and was about to press the end button when Riley practically shouted from his line, begging David to chill the fuck out.

"Oi, oi... joke lang, naneto ang init ng ulo ah."

"If you don't have anything good to say, just shut the fuck up, okay?!" David barked in an angry tone.

Riley raised his hands in mock surrender. A moment of silence shrouds the two of them, not until Riley decides to shatter it all at once.

"Sabi mo diba ilang araw ka 'ring hindi natulog sa penthouse niya?"

"Hmm." David hummed in agreement.

"What made you come back?" Riley moved his head to the side and observed his best friend's expression.

David narrowed his gaze on Riley, quickly picking up on what he was trying to hint at. "It wasn't anything special if that's what you're getting at, Riley."

The corner of Riley's lips turned up as if he's pleased about the fact that David could read between his intentions.

"Wala naman akong sinasabing iba ah. Nagtatanong lang ako," maang-maangan nitong sabi pero hindi naman naniwala doon si David.

David rolled his eyes at him, but he didn't press any further since he could sense that's what Riley wanted him to do.

"I just don't want to arouse suspicions from my grandparents. Panigurado tatanungin nila kung bakit sa bahay ako natutulog at hindi sa bwisit 'kong boss."

Riley just hummed in agreement, which ticked David off and caused him to frown.

"What's with the bloody reaction, Riley?" David snarled at him.

"Bakit nanaman? Sumasang-ayon na 'nga yung tao sayo eh!"

"Tigilan mo 'nga ako. Sumasang-ayon pero ganyan kalaki yung ngisi mo?"

"What? There's nothing wrong about my smile—"

"Everything about you is wrong, Riley," David deadpans.

Riley couldn't hold his laughter anymore when he saw David's ugly and twisted expression. The longer Riley's laugh drags on, the more sour David's expression gets.

Not able to bear Riley's goading any longer, David growled at Riley. Like a full, blown growl.

Riley didn't expect that David's reaction would reach that extent. That's why his laughter quickly went down the drain, and the humor in his body gradually dissipated.
