Beth's nerves were palpable as she turned to Emily, her loyal housemaid, her voice low and urgent. "Emily, can you go to the market and pick up some fresh herbs and spices? I forgot we ran out, and I want to make something special tonight."
Emily, always eager to help, nodded. "Of course, Miss Beth. I'll go right now. Will you be alright here alone?"
Beth forced a smile, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. "Yes, I'll be fine. Thank you, Emily."
As Emily left, closing the door behind her, Beth turned to Ann, her eyes wide with fear. "We don't have much time. Let's go."
Ann nodded, leading Beth out the back door to avoid any prying eyes. They moved quickly, the short distance to Ann's house feeling like miles under the weight of their urgency.
Once inside Ann's house, Ann guided Beth to her room. "Wait here for a couple of minutes. I need to grab some important things. We can't come back once we leave," Ann explained, her voice a mix of calm and haste.
Beth nodded, sitting on the edge of the bed, her mind racing with the enormity of their situation. She listened to the sounds of Ann moving around the house, packing essentials with practiced speed.
Ann returned shortly; a bag slung over her shoulder. "I've got everything. Let's head to my apartment."
They got into Ann's car; the streets quiet as they drove to Richard's. The tension in the car was thick, each mile adding to the urgency of their escape.
Ann and Beth hurried up the stairs to Richard's apartment, their hearts pounding with a mixture of fear and urgency. As they reached the door, Ann took a deep breath and knocked, her hand resting protectively on Beth's shoulder. The door swung open, and Richard stood there, his expression shifting from surprise to confusion and then to concern in a matter of seconds.
"Annie? Beth? What's going on?" Richard asked, his eyes darting between them, trying to read the situation.
Ann stepped inside, gently guiding Beth with her. "We need your help, Richie." she began, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "It's Beth... she's in danger."
Richard closed the door behind them and gestured for them to sit. "Talk to me. What's happening?"
As Ann explained the whole situation, Richard's face hardened, processing the information.
"We need to get out of the country, Richie. As soon as possible," Ann said, her hand squeezing Beth's in a silent vow of support.
Richard nodded, his mind already racing through the possibilities. "Okay, don't worry, give me a few minutes. I need to make some calls, see what I can arrange." He stood up, moving to his desk where his phone lay.
While Richard made his calls, Ann turned to Beth, her eyes full of a mix of love and determination. "We're going to get through this, Beth. I promise you," she whispered, pressing her hand over Beth's.
Beth looked up at Ann, her eyes filled with gratitude and fear. "Thank you. For everything. I just... I can't believe this is happening."
Ann gave her a reassuring smile, then stood and went to the kitchen. She returned a few minutes later with some food. "You need to eat something, Beth. You'll need your strength," she said gently, setting the food in front of Beth.
They ate mostly in silence, the weight of their situation making words feel inadequate. Beth picked at her food, her mind racing with thoughts of the future and the dangers that still lurked behind them.
Richard returned; his expression serious but hopeful. "Okay, I've got some good news. There's a flight to Canada leaving tomorrow evening. It's the best option for getting you both out of here safely and quickly," he announced.
