Chapter 15

Eissen's POV

A week had passed, yet I felt like my mind and soul were still in last week's event. Whenever I closed my eyes at night, the fragments of what happened last week haunted me like a lost ghost searching for peace.

I thought coming here would solve my problem. I thought I would only think and care about Yashveer since Don Yael was only after him. But things got out of my grasp, and even my mind and soul couldn't grip the things that happened.

I want to think that what I feel right now is temporary and will dissolve like a pill I chug down when I am sick. However, it's been a week, and my feelings are still here. The pill inside me doesn't dissolve as I used to think. Maybe it is wrong of me to swallow this pill.

I spent the whole week evading the Wycliffe brothers. I avoid them like they're a kind of toxic disease that could harm me. The pill didn't dissolve inside me, so avoiding the potential disease that could harm me seemed the best choice. It's like the saying goes, 'Prevention is better than cure.'

But it seems like all of my efforts went in vain, dahil alam kong apektado na ako. Apektado na ako sa tatlong Wycliffe pero niloloko ko lang ang sarili ko na wala. Kaya siguro nagre-resist ang katawan ko sa gamot dahil contaminated na ako. They already invaded me. And it's sickening!

Pumikit ako nang mariin at sinandal ang ulo ko sa dingding nitong munti kong silid nang biglang pumasok sa isip ko ang naging usapan namin ni Don Yael noong nakaraang gabi.

"How are you, Eissen?" Ang wika ni Don Yael mula sa kabilang linya. Kakasagot ko lamang sa tawag nito.

Nakita ko kasi ang mensahe niya kanina na tatawag siya ngayong gabi kung kaya't minabuti kong lumabas ng mansyon at dito sa labas piniling hintayin ang tawag ni Don Yael.

"A-ayos naman po ako rito, Don Yael. K-kayo po d'yan?"

Rinig ko ang mabagal nitong halakhak sa kabilang linya. "Thank you for asking, Eissen. I'm fine. Your grandmother is recovering well in the hospital. It seems like she is fighting alongside you."

"M-mabuti naman po kung ganoon." Through text lang kasi nagbabalita sa akin ang personal nurse ni Lola Erming, si Don Yael din ang nagprovide no'n para kay Lola.

"So... how's your mission there? You lasted longer than I expected."

I had already prepared myself for this kind of question because I knew Don Yael would be throwing it at me, yet I still panicked. My Lola is getting better and fighting out there, but I feel like I'm losing this mission.

"I... I already befriended Yashveer, Don Yael. We... get along just enough."

"But not enough to bring him here." Don Yael's voice sounds stern and authoritative, making my body feel chilly. "I hope you also do your job well there, Eissen."

Napatango-tango naman ako kahit na hindi ako nakikita ni Don Yael.

"Opo. Ginagawa ko po ang lahat dito. Dadalhin ko po si Yashveer d'yan."

Matapos ang usapang iyon namin ni Don Yael ay hindi ako nakatulog ng maayos. Ano na ang gagawin ko ngayon? Of all the possible things that could happen to me on this island. Ito pa talaga. Pero kasalanan ko naman talaga ang lahat. Mabilis akong bumigay sa kanila.

Wala na akong ganang lumabas ng silid ko ngunit kailangan kong gawin ang trabaho ko rito. Lumabas ako at naligo bago nagbihis sa aking karaniwang na sinusuot dito, ang oversized tshirt at shorts ko na umaabot naman ang haba hanggang sa ibabaw ng tuhod ko.
