CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE | DAMSEL IN DISTRESS

Gathering her legs to her chest, Natalia tilted her head at her captor. "You know," she started. "If you leave, he might not kill you."
"Not yet."
That perked her attention. "So you are running away."
His eyes arrested hers but instead of making her quiver back and apologise, she stared unaffected at him.
No wonder Lorenzo liked her.
"Not running. Using my brain."
"And I guess you won't explain how to me."
He only glared. "I don't have to explain shit."
Standing out from her seat, she took one beside him, resting her head against his shoulder and causing him to become as still as a statue. "I'll make him stop looking for you. Don't worry."
His eyes arrested hers, trying to find the answers to why she would do that but the answers weren't in her eyes.
"Thanks for taking me away," she admitted. "I'd needed the break." Even if that break was over a fortnight. "I can't remember the last time I had a vacation that wasn't work-related someone." Ever since she started working a decade ago, she hadn't stopped. It was all she did and when she finally stopped, she was forced to look at her life or the lack of it.
Even her hobbies had become work-related.
"You cool?"
Nodding, she gave him a smile. "Yeah. But you're not going to be if you don't leave so I would skedaddle out of here if I were you. Probably to that spitfire girlfriend of yours."
He stilled, confirming her suspicions.
Grinning, she stood up and smoothed her hands down her dress. She'd picked out the prettiest one the man had bought for her all so when Lorenzo rescued her, she'd feel like a damsel in distress. Or more like a princess in distress.
"How-"
"It's obvious," she shrugged. "You keep glancing at your phone, you avoid any kind of touch even if it's just a hand on your shoulder and I know for a fact you did not buy this dress."
"I could've bought it."
Natalia rolled her eyes. "Bullshit. Go back home. Your girlfriend is probably worried and Lorenzo's going to be here any second. Trust me." It was like a sixth sense to her. She just sensed his presence long before he was there.
The stranger – who didn't feel much of a stranger now that she'd spent several days with him – hesitated, looking at her and then the kitchen and then Natalia again and causing her to roll her eyes.
"I can take care of myself. I think I've proven that already."
Glancing at the freshly made scones on the marbled counter, he let out a sigh. She had proved that already. "Fine."
