CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN | RULES

Natalia had done the math. She was a few months pregnant and well over getting an abortion. The knowledge only made her all the angrier with him.
A kiss against the top of her head snapped her out of her daze. Just as she was about to curse him out for touching her, he slid a plate of cubed watermelon before her.
He'd noticed her sudden obsession with watermelon.
She didn't know if it was the heat of Colombian summers or if it had something to do with the pregnancy. All she knew was that she suddenly wanted to cry as she stabbed one of the cubes with the fork and brought it to her mouth.
Lorenzo said nothing, simply pressing another kiss atop her head while rubbing her back as she ate the watermelon with teary eyes.
He'd been extra attentive to her since he apologised and ever since she said that his apology wasn't enough. Every morning, he woke her up to fluttering kisses and before she could complain, he placed a bed tray on her with freshly baked bread, freshly pressed juice, strawberries from their garden and some cold water.
It was odd really how they hadn't talked for several days yet she'd been spending more time with him than ever before. While she read, he massaged her sore ankles and tender muscles. And whenever she tried to dismiss him, before the words could ever leave her mouth, he was out of the door, returning not long after with a little treat or maybe a cold bottle of water.
She opened her mouth, wanting to ask him something but as soon as he saw that her mouth opened he left, leaving her frustration to grow into something else.
Lorenzo returned with a cupcake and she was once again reminded of how these weren't just random foods that he brought but instead ones that were specifically catered to her American palate.
As the day went on, Lorenzo's dotting continued and his mother stared at his behaviour with furrowed eyebrows and his father with an almost nostalgic smile, her anger developed from a frown into a small smile.
Lorenzo's stare snapped to her crinkled eyes as he heard a giggle bubble out of her chest. She was smiling at him.
"It's been days, Lorenzo."
And this was his cue to go and get her another something before she tried to kick him out again.
Natalia grabbed his wrist this time, her touch firm at first before growing self-conscious. She didn't want him to think that she'd forgiven him but she also just... "Can you stay?"
Lorenzo stilled.
"I'm not gonna scream profanities at you or curse at you. We don't even have to talk."
He turned around, looking his eyes with hers and seeing how they darted around. "Do you wanna talk?"
Her fingers fidgeted. "I'm still upset."
