CHAPTER FORTY-THREE | UNKEPT PROMISES

To say that Niccolò was increasingly growing annoyed with his guests was an understatement. They'd long overstayed their welcome and instead of dreading to be left in his deserted manor once more, he'd started to look forward to some peace and quiet.

Instead, the air was filled with angst and violence.

"You know," Niccolò knocked his golf club into the white ball, "I'm sure he means well."

Natalia's glare shot down his comment. "Then he should come and apologise."

Niccolò couldn't remember the last time Lorenzo had apologised to anyone. In fact, he didn't think the man was capable of apologising yet her glare made him doubt that. "You play golf often?"

She used to play a lot in New York but then work called and she stopped. Instead of answering, she shot the golf club, pushing Niccolò's further away and hers closer to the goal.

"The aggressive player, huh."

"Don't blame the player. Blame the game."

His lips tugged as he started walking forward with the girl as if her man wasn't glaring bullets through his back. "What's up with you and Lorenzo?"

Natalia asked. "Don't ask." She was still angry with him. In fact, her simmering anger had boiled over when he took his pillow and decided to sleep in the guest bedroom as if the room didn't have pillows.

He wanted her to know that he was displeased.

Her aggression showed through her lack of sportsmanship. Whenever he made a shot, his ball was pushed further back. She wasn't playing the game, she was playing him.

His eyes turned into slits. "Was that necessary?"

Natalia only hummed as she watched her ball slowly trickle into the hole. "I think it was."

Huffing, it took him a few shots before he reached the goal. "If I can't ask about you and Lorenzo, what can I ask about? Can I ask when you're leaving?"

Just as she was about to say she could leave now, her fear came crashing down on her and she was suddenly beneath Jason once more before blinking herself out of the memory. She was too late, however. He'd caught her fear.

His fingers pinched his lower lip as he observed the girl gather herself from whatever hell she'd dragged herself out of. For a second, he didn't dislike her as much as he thought. She wasn't as naïve as he initially believed.

"What was your question again?"

He glanced over his shoulder and noticed Lorenzo's apparent concern. It was odd to see his friend care for someone so deeply that his anger was forgotten in the midst of their pain. "Nothing important."

He could wait. Observing the two did have its entertainment values.

Natalia tried to shrug off her fear, tried to control it but it showed in her way her hands shook as she held the club and just as she was about to make her hit on the second course, she completely missed much to her embarrassment.
