YOU EXHALED, TIGHTENING YOUR GRIP ON matt's hand as you walked towards the restaurant doors. matt immediately stopped in his tracks, stopping your movements as he turned to face you. he peered down at you with a soft look in his eyes, the same look that also showed he was worried about you. you looked into his blue eyes and you were about to say something but matt spoke before any words could exit your mouth.

"hey, love, you alright?" he asked softly as he lifted his hand to your hair and gently tucked a strand of hair behind your ear. "i promise, everything will go just fine." he lowered his hand, brushing his fingers down your arm then taking your hand again.

you smiled, intertwining your fingers with matt's and nodding. "i'm okay. thank you, baby." you spoke quietly.

matt nodded, leaning in and pressing a soft kiss to your cheek. "ready?" matt asked, looking towards the restaurant. you nodded again, smiling and giving matt's hand a small squeeze before you both started walking towards the entrance. matt opened the door for you and your breath hitched in your throat when you stepped into the restaurant and saw your dad sitting at a table waiting for you and matt. matt gave your dad a little wave and your dad smiled, waving back.

matt looked down to you, giving you an encouraging smile. you peered up at him through your eyelashes and smiled back. matt leaned down and pressed a kiss to your forehead then pulled you towards the table your dad was at. if you had to admit, it was a strange feeling not seeing your dad glaring at matt all the time. it was the first time in your life you saw your dad happy to see matt. but you obviously weren't complaining.

you and matt took the seats in front of your dad. "hey, y/n. you doing good?" your dad asked, giving you a smile.

"yeah, i'm good. thanks for reaching out, i'm glad were here." you smiled back.

your dad nodded. "me too." he said, sipping his water. you watched his eyes glance over to matt direction. once your dad's eyes set onto matt, matt immediately moved his hand out of his lap and placed it on your thigh, feeling relieved once you placed your hand on top of his hand. "so, matt. how are you?" your dad asked.

"uh, yeah, i'm doing good. it's been nice having y/n stay with me. how are you?" matt responded brushing a hand through his hair.

your dad chuckled. "yeah, i bet it's been nice. i've been okay, just missing my daughter. her mom has been missing her a lot, too." your dad looked at you while he spoke. you sighed under your breath as you listened to him speak.

"dad, you know i wouldn't have left if you had just accepted matt into my life." you exhaled. "and i told you that in the moment." you added, staying calm.

matt stayed quiet, letting you and your dad speak. your dad nodded slowly, looking down into his lap then looking back up to you. "i know i've made a ton of mistakes, y/n, and believe me, i regret it so much. i wish i could have been the dad you wanted me to be but trust me, i'm going to start trying my hardest." your dad explained. "and matt, i'd like to get to know you better." he added, looking at matt. matt nodded, returning eye contact.

you thought for a second then spoke. "i'll believe it when i see it. but just so you know, he's the one i want ." you said quietly.

"that's fair; i understand, y/n. you don't owe me an immediate apology." your dad admitted. matt decided to change the topic, opening his mouth to speak.

YOU NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN. the day you saw your dad getting along with matt. it was a different sight to see, and a different feeling to feel. but you loved this change. it felt right. besides, you've been waiting for this for a long time. you smiled, watching matt and your dad joke around together. your dad started to become very invested in matt's life the more they spoke and got to know each other. and the more they talked and the more you listened to their conversations, you knew they would be getting along a lot better very soon.
