Chapter 16: Road Works

The city of New York was in one of its rare peaceful states, where for once nothing was blowing up and the inhabitants weren't running for their lives. Everyone was calm and getting on with their everyday chores and activities, for the first time in a while without being interrupted.

Two ginger women, twins, walked along a peaceful street in the centre of the city. Both chatting away happily, heading towards the mall on their day off. Neither seemed too bothered about the worlds around them as they continued with their bubbly conversation.

It was only when they reached some road works that the conversation stopped. The twins glanced at one another before learning over slightly, to see the road works. It was only a small hole with three people around it working. None of the worker had safety equipment with them or on.

"Excuse me!" One of the twins called, her hair was slightly darker than her twin's.

"Ashley!" The other snapped.

"Shut up Andrea." Ashley replied just as harshly. "Excuse me!" She called again, learning over the railing slightly. One of the works looked away from their work and looked up to the two girls, the worker was female. She had blonde hair with green/blue/grey eyes that were darker than the average person.

Without a word the blonde tuned back to her work and muttered something quietly to her two workers. The others looked at her for a moment before continuing their work. "Excuse me but you aren't being safe right now!" Andrea yelled, angry that the workers had ignored her sister.

The blonde stood to her feet and walked over to the fiery haired twins. She got to the railings, moved over to the side and jumped over them. The twins watched her closely as she advanced towards them. Ashley and Andrea exchanged looks again before backing up slightly.

However, it was a little too late. The blonde had reached forward ams grabbed their wrists tightly, pulling them towards her. The girls began to panic as the female worker dragged them away from the site. When they were around thirty meters away the blonde let go and turned to face them.

"Get out of her." She hissed. "Before you get hurt." With that the worker jogged back to the site, jumped over the railing again and continued with what she was doing before hand. The twins blinked a few times before walking quickly away from the road workers in the middle of the road.

The three workers continued for a few more hours, not once getting another interruption. It was around seven in the evening when they finished, the streets had almost became completely clear. The workers all stood to their feet and began moving away from their work.

"Seven am tomorrow?" The brunette female asked, her eyes taking another quick glance at the road works.

"Yes." The male nodded stiffly.

"Nope, seven pm apparently!" The blonde sudden exclaimed, her steps becoming faster as she caught up with the two brunettes. "It's about to blow!" Instantly the brunettes jumped into action. The female began running away, making sure to keep on the route to get her destination.

The male however waited for a moment to grab the blonde and drag her along with him. However as they caught up with the other female the bomb exploded. The male pushed the blonde behind him so he took the force while the brunette female jumped to the side as tarmac began flying everywhere followed by fire and the force of the explosion.

All three of them were thrown back further up the road and covered by the flying road pieces and dust. Instantly sirens were wailing in the distance, becoming louder and louder. However that sound didn't reach the trios ears, for they had all fallen unconscious as they hit the concert.

Oh, another explosion on the for once peaceful city.

I don't even know while New York tries anymore, it's like the team trying for a day off it just doesn't happen.
