Przemyśl is a small town located in Modern south eastern Poland today however during the first world war the little town sat on the River San and had a massive fortress which was heavily militarized and guarded at all times.
This military fort was a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire on its North eastern border with the Russian empire. And it was in the sandwich as oncoming Russian troops launched attacks on the town and once they took the town the fortress refused to surrender which left the Russians to seige the fortress until they were forced to surrender into starvation. However the forced in Przemyśl were rather more formidable then expected and they put up a tough fight to stay alive. And this would eventually become the longest seige of world war one. As the invasion of Austria-Hungary began, the Russian troops had gained large ground and actually were even able to push the Germans back somewhat into their own territory. However this was because the Russians had mobilised faster than expected by the Kaiser. And Austria-Hungary with its failing military and modernization it quickly retreated because of it. However the Fort on the river San was close to surrender as the Russians marching deeper into Austria Hungary they became further behind enemy territory as food, ammunition and morale were near rock bottom. Soon they had no choice but to surrender because the Russians kept bombarding the fort with large amounts of artillery. And the fort would become a part of the Russian defence as the Germans and Austro-Hungarian troops counterattack and eventually the Russians abandoned the fort theirselves and Austria Hungary had regained control of their fort. And Przemyśl was back in Austro Hungarian control.
The fort played a significant role in the early war on the Eastern front of World war one. As the Austro Hungarian persistence, despite inconsistent and poor military capabilities, it still proved that Austria Hungary had the fighting spirit to hold one of their oldest forts that had existed for centuries. And even with the superior Russian forces surrounding them, they still held out for over 131 days before they fell to their demise of Ammunition and food shortages. And with German assistance they finally removed Russian troops from both Przemyśl and the North eastern region of Austria Hungary. And would lead the further Russian retreat in 1915. And the eventual revolution in 1917.
