The Battle of Britain was a non infantry contacted battle that took place over the English channel and in multiple air attacks by the German Luffwaffe. With the RAF trying to defend Britain from attacks since early August and September. To see how it happened let's go into further details.
After the invasion of Denmark, Norway and France were alongside the Belgian and Dutch too. They all tried to resist except for Denmark and soon eventually they all fell to German occupation after their failure to defend.
Which left Britain and her empire alone in the war with Italy also declaring war on Britain and its empire. Which not only affected the situation but also put pressure on British colonies. In the Middle east and in North Africa line Egypt.Since Britain was an island it couldn't be invaded by land. So the German sent out its navy to try and defeat the Royal navy however the Royal navy was far larger and stronger then the German navy. And decided to aim for their aerial power. They bombed many of the RAF bases all across the Isles and many of the bases were reduced to rubble. Then for a long period of time their was a period of heavy bombing raids on London and other major cities in the UK. After Churchill ordered the RAF to do a small aerial attack on Berlin. And after Hitler being furious he targeted London with all the bombs he had. And this period of time was known as the Blitz. Where poor young children were sent to the countryside away from their parents and alone with other people.
The RAF after being relieved by the Germans not targeting their bases. Had reorganised and repaired the damage. They then sent out their aerial defence units to eliminate the Luftwaffe from continuously destroying London. After many of the Luftwaffe planes were destroyed, Hitler ordered a full on air attack across London and Southern England and the RAF who were much highly skilled and had better superiority in technology as a radar. The British defeated them in the Battle of Britain in 1940. And with the Channel in British superiority the invasion attempt was a failure and forced to postpone his attempt to invade Britain which he would never have the chance to do again. Operation Sealion was an absolute disaster. And marked one of the biggest allied victories of the entire world war.
What made this battle so significant is that it was the largest empire in the world being challenged by a new superpower that only appeared a few years ago. However the despite the heavy bombing and the large destruction caused by bombing the British never gave up as they held on for life and with their superiority in technology and flying skills. Despite the RAF being outnumbered 3:1 they still defeated the Germans with one of the best planes of WW2 the supreme Spitfire. And the Luftwaffe with many of their pilots lost and planes destroyed. Hitler's war machine finally saw a limit to its strength in air superiority.
