November 1944, In Hungary the last German ally to withstand the Allies. The Red army had recovered most of its lost territory and has now pushed into central Europe. However their offensive into Germany has been halted as Germany was sending the last armoured divisions it had to combat against the Soviet armoured divisions. And soon they were at the outskirts of Budapest. And then launched an assault in the North but it was quickly repelled by the strong German defence. So the Red army decided that they would focus on a smaller goal which was to capture Budapest and turn Hungary against Germany. However Hungary had a coup in 1943 and was replaced with a strong pro German government. And this government would then lead the Hungarian armies.
However by the time they reached Budapest, the Hungarian army had fully mobilised into form. And eventually they were at Budapest. However despite the Red army numerical superiority they still had to fight some if the best German armoured vehicles and tanks. And by the time they started the assault the Germans sent their last reserves to the front. However in Budapest, there was a large German Hungarian garrison. That had entrenched itself inside the city. And because it would be hell to try and go straight through it meant thsy they would decide to encircle and seige the city until they'd surrender.
The Red army began their assault in early December 1944 and they had achieved progress and pierced the Axis lines. And was able to cut off the German Hungarian garrison in Budapest. However the garrison did not surrender. Which was a big pain for the red army because it gave time for the Germans to bring reinforcements to the front and push them back. The Soviets could not advance until Budapest was captured. The seige last just over a month and would result in more deaths and casualties for the Red army then the Axis themselves. However during the seige the last German attack of the entire war happened. The last armoured divisions arrived and they driven an assault to reestablished the land connection with Budapest. However before they made any significant progress, their units had ran out of steam. And their attack was halted. And therefore after significant fighting, the Budapest garrison had surrendered to the Red army.
The pro German government in Hungary had collapsed. With the fall of the government when the city fell, they capitulated the rest of their forces and were dearmed by the Germans. Then the Red army established a pro Soviet Hungarian government that then remobolised on the side of the Allies. And with Hungary defeated and Budapest captured, Germany was the last Axis member in Europe remaining.
