The battle for Wuhan was a very important and strategic battle fought by the Japanese imperialist forces against the Chinese defenders of the city. The battle would last rather long but would result in a Chinese defeat. Wuhan was the capital of China because it had lost Nanjing, Beijing and Shanghai to. But now with the loss of Wuhan aswell, they moved the capital to the city of Chonquing. Where the it was far away from the main battle ground of Asia.
The war started in 1937 after the Marco polo bridge incident that occured after large misunderstandings and accusations arose on eachother until fighting broke out and the troops exchanged fire on the bridge marking the start of the war for China and Japan. The Chinese had a larger army nearly 4:1 the size of Japan's army however they were poorly equipped and not trained properly and with the civil war and recessions one after another, they had a huge lack of military equipment and weapons aswell. Due to the lack of funding and financial support. The military was in shambles but the Japanese army was well equipped, trained and organised. Which allowed them even in smaller numbers still take key areas like Wuhan with limited resistance and fighting. And would result in a 95% chance of defeating China in a battle. And this is exactly what happened in the city of Wuhan.
The Chinese defenders sat and waited patiently for the Japanese armies to come to them so they hold them off and bog them down into a stalemate. However the Chinese had poor and outdated equipment with old rusty bolt action rifles and handguns used in older wars like WW1 and the battle for Korea in 1910. However the Japanese war industry had been rapidly expanding and improving its capabilities to the next levels. And with the newest levels of tanks and weapons, the Chinese were no match for the Chinese despite their superior numbers and troop count. The Chinese waited until small groups of Japanese troops arrived and the Chinese opened fire holding them back behind any cover they could find or get to. Until the Japanese flanked from the North east and then the Southern flank. Now with the city at risk of encirclement, they decided to abandon the city and give it away to the Japanese resulting and marking another historically large defeat for the Chinese army for the 5th time.
If it had not been for the poor Chinese military forces and their lack of weapons and equipment with training. It results in poor military strategy and large defeats from far smaller armies because Quality > Quantity will win in key battles like this one in Wuhan. And the clever Japanese planning to flank from all directions to give the feeling of encirclement and vulnerability to the Chinese and then would result in Japanese victory and a crystal clear plan to unite its forces trapped in Indochina. And therefore should be a key Japanese culture and bombing.
