The Battle of Kursk was one of the most famous battles in history because it was the largest tank battle the world had even seen and there was nearly over 11,000 tanks involved in the battle. And this would result in an attempt to encircle the Red army around the town of Kursk as there was a large bulge in the line and by liquidating them, they could counter attack back towards Moscow. However the German high command were not weary that the Soviets were prepared in fortifications.
After the defeats in the Caucasus, the Germans were forced to retreat from Stalingrad and were cut off from the rest of mainland Europe which then they were forced to retreat through the Crimea Peninsula and over water. And after a constant retreat and maneuvers, the Soviet lines had broken and they counter attacked and made them retreat a largely significant piece of territory as it was a part of the German 1943 summer campaign to turn the war back into their favour. However the Red army were able to recover their men and reorganised along a river line. And Hitler and his Generals thought that they could encircle the Red army at Kursk so they took the attempt.
The German Northern attack was a go and the German Panzer divisions were forced through thousands of land mines and barbed wire as fierce Soviet defence slowed their assault. Eventually the Northern attack was halted and then they decided to launch the southern attack to catch them off guard. They push and push further with everyday, their success was far bigger but it still wasnt enough to reach Kursk. And because they were lacking reinforcements, and equipment so they were forced to hold their positions. Until the Soviet counterattack pushed them away from Kursk. Marking the failure of the German summer campaign of 1943. And this would allow the Red army to move further west and covering full superiority of the eastern front.
What made this battle so significant was that it was the largest tank battle in history involving over 11,000 tanks including the the Tiger 1 and 2 and even the world famous T-34 with a large turret and cannon. However after fierce fighting the Germans still couldn't regain control of the eastern front leading to a crisis and causing them to have a fighting retreat. And this would be the destruction of the German war machine in 1945.
