Operation Torch was an important operation to land on the west coast of Africa on the French Colonies of Morocco, Western Sahara and Algeria however the Puppet state of Vichy France would not put up as much resistance as they had expected because many of them defected to the Allies with minimal resistance. Let's see what happened with the operation.
After the large defeat of Axis troops at the battle of El Alamein, Rommel was on the run with the men he had left. And the British and Commonwealth troops chased them down all the way into Libya. And all the French forces on the coast guarding the west African coast. Since they had no desires to be a part of the Axis many of them defected. And this allowed the allies to land on the west African coast with minimal resistance and fighting. However the Southern forces in the southern Morocco were under the influence of German command and they put up heavy resistance and fighting. But after the events of French forces defecting to the Allies. Hitler could no longer trust the Vichy French government in mainland France and they took the puppet state and the Vichy French government did not resist the German troops. And France was fully annexed into an occupation zone. And Italy got to annex some territory in Southern France.
The British and American troops landed on the Western coast and the persuing British and commonwealth forces on the North east African front. Were slowly squeezing the Axis into a corner and many of the German and Italian troops had escaped into Tunisia where they attempted to make their last stand and turn the situation around. However the limited German troops and armoured divisions didnt put up enough of a fight and they were halted to a stalemate before Hitler and Mussolini attempted to evacuate many of their men to the island of Sicily. However despite some of them escaping. Nearly 200,000 Axis troops were captured and taken as POW. And then would lead onto the Battle of Sicily. As Germany was in retreat on all fronts as the eastern front was in a crisis and the defeat at the battle of Kursk solidified Soviet military supremacy and they could maneuver even now in the summer times aswell. 1943 was not a great year for the Axis, especially Germany and Hitler's plans.
