Verdun was a large major French city that had one if the deadliest battles of the first world war. As the defensive French troops holding their positions were ruthlessly attacked strike after strike by oncoming German forces. However the French forces continued to persist in defence as the Germans kept throwing men at the lines. Hoping to make a breakthrough to the city of Verdun as the German high command and the Kaiser knew that if the city was taken by force. It would be a crushing blow to both the French military and morale. So there hope was to take the forts surrounding the city and hold the high ground on them until they were forced into surrender...
1916 the longest military battle to ever take place...
German high command wants to take the city of Verdun by force however guarding the city is a large French army with tough fortifications and positions. As the start of the battle commenced over 2 million artillery shells were launched from their cannons. And nearly 300,000 German troops were awaiting orders for attack. While the poorer supplied French had only 250,000 men holding out for long and they can but with many reserves arriving to the front they could replace their losses quickly. The French were holding the forts around the city and were extremely stubborn and refusing to move from the forts. So the only way to make them move was by artillery. However even after thousands of shells were fired they still didnt budge. So the German generals thought the only way was to throw their men at the lines until there was a breakthrough. Over the course of six months, thousands of German troops in waves of attacks started and the superior French machine guns bogged the Germans down and many were killed for the lucky few who were able to penetrate the French lines and were quickly stopped and captured which resulted in multiple failed assaults.
Eventually the French army cried out to its allies to do something to lure the German attention away and two of their allies responded pwith their own attacks on the German lines. Britain launched one of the deadliest assaults in History known as the battle of the Somme and then the Russian empire launched the Brusilov offensive to retake its lost lands in 1914-1915. This would eventually cause many German troops to be diverted away from Verdun resulting in a French victory. One of the first major of the entire war.
This would of been a major blow to both the French military and morale but with persistent opposition and tough defensive positions the French denied the Germans much ground as they physically could however some forts were captured by the Germans but then they were forced to retreat because of the diversion of troops. Which would put this battle down in both the record books and also as one of the most key battles in history. Its record of being the longest battle in history history over 9 months and 3 weeks of pure battle and bloodshed over the battlefield. The Germans would also suffer more casualties because their offensive attacks and for throwing German men at the French lines in the middle of the night. If it wasn't for tough French resistance and the formidable defensive positions. The Germans would of likely taken the city and would of lead to further military defeats for France.
