Aisne was also a small village located in North eastern France that was under German occupation for much of the first world war and after being captured in 1914 many inhabitants were forced to leave their homes.
In 1917 after a long and hard stalemate for nearly 3 years, the French decided that with Russian defeat and them being near the brink of collapse they decided to try and divert German attention away from Russia and back to France. And because Aisne was in such a perfect position, they decided that they would launch and assault through the night to catch the Germans by suprise however the attack was heavily contradicted and over shadowed by the other allies like Britian and Belgium. Because of its unnecessary need to happen in the first place as Russia had basically already collapsed as its Tsardom and Monarchy had abdicated. And then a provisional government was put in place and created the Russian republic that was very short lived before the Communists attacked.
France first launched the attack in the middle of the night to catch the Germans defenders off guard and many of them were asleep and not aware of the danger caused. And despite many French men being a part of the assault the campaign was hardly a success, as they barely pushed a few tens of kilometres into enemy territory. And it came at the cost of tens of thousands of troops who were both dead wounded and missing. Which resulted in German victory. And because of the uncertainty and over shadowing of the other allies, the French failed their main goal of diverting troops away from the eastern front against Russia who again was near the brink of collapse in revolts.
Also after this pretty much French defeat, the armies morale had dropped so low that now there was mutiny in the French army and this would help the Germans to their advantage. As this would also be the second battle of Aisne after the first battle in 1914. However the one that were talking about is the second battle of Aisne in 1917 which was an attempt of Anglo-French forces to inflict a major blow to Both German troops and morale which would lead to more men to not mutiny but because of the inconsistency of the Anglo-French armies, they barely pushed forward and the battle was deemed inclusive.
Which would cause a even longer trench warfare and 0 affects were taken for the central powers and Russian troops had not seen the affect of German diversion. Which then would lead to the collapse of Russia and start the spark for the communist revolutionary civil war in 1917-1922.
