After the failure of the Axis desert campaign, they would find theirselves booted out of North Africa after trying to fight their way out in Tunisia and would then retreat to the island of Sicily where the British and American troops would pursue the retreating Axis forces. However after the fall of Sicily a major shift in the power balance would occur and this would then result in the surrender of one of the powers. But to see let's see what happened in Sicily.
9th July 1943, the Axis German and Italian troops are exhausted and weak after their failure to complete the North African campaign. They failed to defend Tunisia in June 1943 and seek refuge on the island of Sicily for the time being aware that an imminent attack from the Allies would happen a month later. British and American troops land on the southern coast of the island and the Axis spring into action. However the superior armoured units and divisions would prove effective but the Allies and the Italian troops were cut off to the west and the American encircled and destroyed their units. Then with the diversion complete, the remaining troops send information to call for reinforcements they do arrive but they still don't affect the Allies.
Soon all hope is lost for the Axis to regain control of Sicily and they decide to abandon and evacuate the island which they begin to send their units and slowly they are pushed back onto the Italian mainland. Where the tides would begin to shift into the Allies favour. The already exhausted Axis troops are willing to give up especially the Italian units after the Fascist government was overthrown and Mussolini was imprisoned by the nationalists and anti-fascist sentiments. Then the new government would sue for peace and sign the armastice. However Hitler had other plans and the already current troops regained control of Italy and set up their own puppet government and military forces in the Northern region of Italy. Whilst the Southern Italians would fight beside the Allies to remove every inch of fascist ideas and movements.Hitler had sent reinforcements to the sector but would it be enough to secure their position in the North of Italy. The Italian civil war had begun...
