Ranpo and Kenji took the train back as they were finished with the case they were sent on.
The older leaned back on his seat, his hands behind his neck, a lollipop in his mouth. It was pleasant to show his intelligence to new people. It felt nice. More people get to know the world's greatest detective, but of course he won't talk about the part, that he doesn't know how to take the train. That can remain between the agency.
Kenji glanced at the illuminated board placed near the ceiling, checking the times assigned to the destinations.
"Thirty more minutes and we'll be back in the agency!" he stated with a smile, glancing at Ranpo.
"Great."
It was around noon. One hour after twelve, if we want to be exact. Surprisingly, the two finished fast at the crime scene. The raven haired detective was hungry. He forgot the last time he ate. Maybe around nine in the morning? Eight? Doesn't matter, he shook his head. He thought about the food he is going to have as his lunch. Tonkatsu? He wasn't feeling like it. Soba? Nah, not now. Some red bean soup with mochi sounded nice. Without the mochi, of course. It's not sweet enough for his liking.
The blond boy stared outside of the window, admiring the city at this hour. It wasn't special or anything, he just had nothing better to do, and it could keep his mind busy. Kenji watched the cars on the main street, the usual crowd near a famous restaurant - was it already time for lunch? He didn't even notice - , and of course, the birds flying across the light blue sky caught his attention too.
The boy wondered how it was like to be a bird countless times, even before he would come to Yokohama. It seemed fun. Just gliding in the sky with a bunch of friends... he wanted to try flying once. How does it feel to be that high up, without being worried you'll fall, Kenji thought. This dream seemed distant, yet it didn't sadden him. It was just a silly idea anyways. It's not completely lost though. Maybe - just maybe! - there will be the chance for him and the agency to get on a plane and travel to another country. That would be fun.
Kenji checked the time again. The thirty minuted passed like a second, yet the train didn't stop. He looked back at the other passengers of the train, but he saw none.
The train was empty. Completely. Had he not notice everyone got off at a stop? Maybe. It was still weird though. So sudden...
"Where did everyone go?" asked calmly Kenji when turned to his left.
The seat was empty though. Ranpo was not here either.
"Ranpo-san?" he called out after he stood up from his seat, but no one responded.
He wandered around the railway carriage, even checked the toilets, but everyone disappeared. To his surprise, even the driver's cabin was empty. But then how did the train keep moving? He wondered when he went back to where he started out.
Kenji wanted to sit down and just think, but something caught his eye.
He kneeled on one of the seat, and leaned against the window. He put his hands against the glass, his noise almost touching the window as he was left speechless. The train was not on the rail. It was not in the city either. It was flying.
There he was, stuck in the railway carriage, levitating high up in the sky, showing no signs of it wanting to fall down, almost like it was designated to fly in the first place. Despite the situation, the light blue sky seemed unbothered: birds minding their own business, wandering to different places in teams, the clouds - which were at eye level to Kenji - moving in their slow pace as the light wind pushes them forward, and the sun almost smiling down at the boy. Almost smiling like it is completely normal for him to be up in the sky.
