Qin could feel the tension in the air, she knew full well that snakes had a strong dislikes for eagles and vice versa still she would make sure they would get along, it would most likely take a long time before anyone would trust anyone fully, except for Harvey, everyone trusted Harvey, most likely because of his gentle appearance and that he was of no threat having no marks at all. Still they had to be able to get along until they would trust each other. She made them play with her, childish games that she thought might help with trust and have them have to communicate with each other other, poor Harvey felt a little left out since he could never stay long, Qin let him sleep in the cave once in a while when he had told the village he was off searching for herbs. He liked sleeping next the the cub, her scent was very faint but still it was soothing and felt nice to sniff. Qin had always liked cats and cute things in her other life but most of them were all extinct while she was alive so she had only experienced seeing them on the screen or on photos, she asked Winston and Harvey always to sleep in their beast form so she could snuggle and pet them, she made sure to include Curtis by asking him if she could use his tail as a pillow and of course he could not deny her, he loved seeing her sleep on him, he loved that she relied on him and trusted him.
Winter had decided to come with a bang, it started to snow one day and just would not stop, the air got a lot cooler and it was freezing, Qin had thought she would be able to endure the cold but it was not the same as being under the sea, it was much more colder on land than in the depth of her home in the sea, she used Winston and Muir to keep herself warm, Curtis and Winston had hunted a lot before winter and Curtis had made all kinds of fur to use for Qin to keep warm, still it was not enough, they had to start a fire, they had collected enough firewood for the winter just in case but they really did not want to use it, their location could be easily seen so that predators might come to steal their hunt but they had no choice, it would be safer if they were in a village but they were not, they did not know either if any scorpions were still in the area but they thought it was highly unlikely since they would have gotten back home for the winter, they did not like the cold very much, still they were powerful enough to to fend off many attackers but Qin might get hurt or stolen. Curtis was the one that was most worried, he had prolonged his hibernation as long as he could since he wanted to be near Qin and protect her, he liked how affectionate she was, he liked how she worried for him, he liked that she was encouraging him to go to hibernate even though it would leave her with less guardians, she was more worried that it would affect him if he did not go soon to hibernate. Qin had made sure to show him that he did not need to worry, she would still be here when he came back, she told him to trust in Winston and Muir, they were excellent fighters too and would protect her well. Harvey had to stay in the village for winter since it would be found out very soon if was not there, Qin said he had to live there this one winter and next spring they would move and he would never be a part from her again, it made him happy thinking of being with her for the rest of his life so he thought being lonely just one winter was worth it for the rest of his life. Harvey was also excited he had never travelled much since it was just too dangerous for a beast with no marks like him, he still did not mind what they would do as long as he could he near Qin, she brought so much joy to his mundane life, he had thought he was content before but that was before he knew what life could be like, she brought the fun he did not know he was missing.
Curtis left to hibernate so it was just the three of them. For some strange reason Qin was much more tired than usual and she slept more than she had ever done before, she had no idea why. She missed the sea and the lake, she could not take a dip, it was too cold and most of the lake was frozen, she thought that maybe the reason for their tiredness was that she could not swim in her beast form, still it was just an idea, she had no idea, she was afraid of getting sick, it was so cold in the cave even if it was lit up, the winds were howling outside and she could feel the cold air seeping down every crack, she laid down covered in furs and near the fireplace, Winston was mostly in his beast form to keep her warm, he was worried, it had never been so cold this time during winter, he was afraid she might get sick and worried if they should go and get Harvey, Qin protested, she was not ill at all only tired, she lied to them to soothe their anxiety and told them she was sleeping this much because she was not in the sea, she told them not to worry she would be like herself again as soon as she could swim again. She told them that her body needed more energy in this form and that is why she was so tired. They asked her to please be in her mermaid form then but she told them no, it was not very comfortable being in that form if she was not in the water and the longer time that went by the more it would hurt, Winston and Muir felt helpless, they could do nothing to help her except give her warmth, she could sleep for two days in a row and only awaken to eat and then fall asleep again, even if she had tried to calm them they were worried, it could not be good to sleep this much but they could do nothing but watch her but when she had slept for more than three days Muir had had enough and went to collect the healer.
The weather was horrible but still he did not care, he was so worried for the little cub, he would not feel ease until he knew what was happening. The trip to get Harvey took longer than Muir would have wanted, they weather was so bad that he had a hard time flying against the strong winds, still he did not stop, he had to get the healer, even if it would kill him. Winston and Muir had talked about getting the healer for more than a day, Winston wanted to go but Muir told him that he would be quicker so it was decided it was best that he would go, Winston had gotten to know Muir well since it was only the two of them most of the time, he liked that he was cool in a crisis even if he was worried, the eagle had impressed him but that did not mean he trusted him, he could easily live with him that was very important since they would be living together for some time, at least until Qin came of age, he hoped she would be a cub forever, he never wanted to leave her.
Muir finally reached the village, he knew where Harvey's hut was and rushed to his house, he was more dead than alive, he had just used the last of his energy to bang the door before he passed out. Harvey was surprised what he saw when he opened the door, he was quick to drag Muir inside and give him warmth, he was worried, the eagle would not have come unless something had happened to Qin, he had to nurse the eagle as quick as possible so that he could know what had happened. It took almost one day before Muir finally awakened, Harvey had not left his side, giving him nourishing soups to try to help him gain his strength back, Muir was quick on his feet and asked how long he had been out, Harvey told him so and Muir was worried, he hoped Qin had woken up by herself by now but he had no way of knowing that. He told Harvey how much Qin had been sleeping and that he was worried she might be sick, Harvey was very concerned and took what he needed and got ready to leave his hut for a long time, he had decided to not return, it was more important that Qin health was good than anyone knowing that he was gone, he took all that he would need for the winter and told Muir he was ready, Muir told him that he had to hold on and it would be a very hard journey since he had no marks, Harvey did not mind, Qins safety was all that mattered, he would endure, he would not let himself die before helping her. Muir was right, the weather was horrendous, the winds were strong and the snow got in your face so that it stung, Harvey fixed himself so that it would not snow on his face, his only thought was to hold on and live. Muir took off, he had been hoping that he would be lucky and the winds would help in on his way back but it was just as bad, he now had more weight on his back but he would not quit, he would never give up, his little cub needed him, with that thought both Harvey and Muir risked their life's to get back to the little cub they so adored.
