Veronica had been sitting beside Natalie, the fire was going, providing the group little warmth, but it was better then nothing.
Veronica pulled the sleeves of her blue jumper over her hands, bringing her knees up to her chest. No one was talking, they were just letting everything soak in, thinking about what had occurred over the last 24 hours.
All Veronica could think about was her parents.
She imagined her mother just sitting, waiting by the phone for a phone call from her daughter that wasn't going to come.
She could see her mother stress, making her 3rd mug of tea, relentlessly checking her watch, checking the phone messages, calling her father, everything.
Veronica looked down at her own watch, one her mother had given her when she was 13.
She never took it off, the only time she did was when she was showering or swimming, other than that, it stayed on.
It was a small watch, one that wasn't super bulky and stood out like a sore thumb.
The watch pendent was an oval with a silver lining, her watch band was a cornflower blue and was made of leather.
"Laura Lee, are you alright?"
Veronica had tore her gaze away from her watch, just now realizing Laura Lee had been softly sobbing.
"This is all my fault. I did something really bad. I kept screwing up in my piano lesson last week. Mrs. Brophy kept yelling at me. Sharp. F Sharp. F Sharp. I just...I couldn't take it anymore. So I called her a bad word. Just in my head, but, God heard me," Laura Lee sniffled.
"Now we're all being punished."
Veronica looks at the blonde, "What did you call her?"
Laura Lee hesitates, before meekly whispering, "Cunt,"
Van begins to laugh, Taissa nudging her.
Veronica was the next one to giggle, "I'm sorry," she laughed as Taissa tried to get her to stop laughing. She covered her face as the laughs continued.
The whole team began laughing, roars of laughter erupted, Laura Lee even giggling.
"I steal shitty clothes from T.J. Maxx" Lottie confessed.
"What?" Van laughs.
"Then I return them and get credit that I never use and I have thousands of dollars in T.J bucks."
Veronica laughs, "Oh my god,"
"I used to sneak downstairs after everyone had gone to bed and watch The Color of Night so I could pause on Bruce Willis' wang"
"Bruce Willis? Really?" Veronica laughed, looking over at Natalie, looking at her fondly as she saw the blonde laughing.
Veronica found herself being addicted to Natalie's smile, she couldn't stop staring at her.
"That's definitely why we crashed" Taissa laughs.
"I mean...Jeff's not bad but...Dam am I right?"
Natalie looked over at Veronica, "What about you Howard? You have any secrets big enough to crash a plane?"
Veronica sighed as she tapped her fingers on her knees, thinking.
"I swear, if you say you got back together with Danny-" Van laughs.
"What!? You and Danny?" Jackie looks over.
"Again!?" Lottie asks.
"Woah, definitely not! We did not get back together or drunk hookup or anything like that," she assured.
"Good," Natalie chips in, "You were way, way too hot for him anyway,"
Veronica felt a blush spread on her cheeks, looking away.
Veronica sighs, reaching into her pocket, pulling out her letter from Duke.
"I got this, this morning,"
"Holy shit, open it!" Taissa looks at the girl, being fully aware of that Duke has been her dream school since they were kids.
Veronica took a breath, getting ready to open the letter, only stopping when Coach Scott's scream pierced everyone's ears.
Everyone shot up, racing over, seeing Misty standing over him.
"What the actual fuck Misty?"
"I had to stop the bleeding... for good,"
~~~
It had been three days.
Three days.
No one had showed up to save them, it was clear they had been lost and they probably wouldn't be found, not anytime soon anyway.
