Veronica flattened out her Leatherman jacket, that she paired with high waisted jeans and a crop top, adjusting her hair in her mirror, double checking her bag, making sure she had everything before stalking up her carry on.
She shoved numerous books and packs of Cigarettes in her bag, enough to last her well over the supposed week they were going to be in Seattle. . As well as her Walkman, headphones and various cassettes, she also chucked a few extra batteries in there, just in case.
She made her way downstairs, her mother passing her a mug of coffee.

"Thank you," she smiles as she takes a sip from the mug.
"Are you ready?" she asks, Veronica nods.
"Yeah, I'm ready,"
"Okay, finish that, I'll get my keys. Make sure you say goodbye to your father,"
Veronica nodded, walking over to her fathers study, knocking on the door. "Yes?"
"Hi, dad, I'm about to leave,"
To her surprise, her father stood, giving his daughter a hug.

The Howards were not an affectionate family.
Her parents, William and Jennifer, were firm believers that tough love was the way to go. They never coddled her daughter, even as a kid.
They were also an old fashioned family. They went to church every Sunday, despite Veronica's more atheist beliefs.
Her parents were firm believers of regular gender rolls as well as male and female relationship.
Veronica was embarrassed whenever the topic of gay people were brought up, her parents borderline homophobia made her cringe every single time.
They also weren't ones for comfort, they thought if they let Veronica do it on her own, she would grow strong and independent.
To some degree, it worked, but, it also made her feel the urge for comfort while also not being able to stand it when affection was shown to her.
Veronica would lay in be at night and think that, that was the main reason Danny cheated on her.
While their tough love may have made her stronger, all she had wished they would have done was for her parents to be nice to her.

Veronica hesitantly wrapped her arms around her dad, taking a breath.
"Wow dad, don't tell me you're going soft on me," she teases.
Her father pulled away, "Please, play your best. You know victory is just in your reach,"
"I'll play my best, I promise. I won't let you and mom down,"
"That's my girl," he smiles, "Now, don't keep your mom waiting, and hey? I love you Franky,"
Veronica playfully rolls her eyes at the nickname her father had been calling her since she was a little kid.
"I love you too, dad,"
The words were hard ones to muster up, it felt like spiders were crawling up her throat as she said them, but, she still said them.

Veronica sat in her mothers car, her legs bouncing up and down.
"Don't freak yourself out. You don't want to get too in your head and end up making a mistake,"
Veronica nods, "Okay, I won't,"
"And please, don't smoke before the game. We don't want you being out of breath and lose momentum,"
Veronica nods, "Got it,"
Her mother parked her car, "Love you sweetie, call me when you get there,"
"I love you too mom, I will,"
"Oh! Before I forget!" Veronica gasped when she saw her mom pull out a letter from Duke university.
"Holy shit,"
"Language!"
"Sorry, I'll uh, I'll open it later. If I got rejected," she cringes at the thought of being rejected from her dream school, "I don't want it clouding my judgment,"

Veronica had her headphone's around her neck, she had taken a seat next to Taissa.
"Hey, we're okay, right?" Taissa asks.
"Yeah, of course, Tai,"
Taissa smiles, nodding. Veronica's eyes followed Natalie, the girl gave her a small smile before taking a seat behind them.
"I saw you two leave the party together last night,"
Veronica smiles, "Yeah, she was high out of her mind and was planning on walking home. Besides, I saw you and Van sneak off into the woods," the girl teases, more then aware of her two best friends 'casual' hookups.
Taissa blushed, a flustered look appearing on her face, "That's what I thought,"
Taissa rolls her eyes, "Just put on your headphones and take a nap,"
"Don't need to tell me twice," she replies, putting her headphones on, feeling herself begin to slowly drift asleep.

~~~
Veronica felt something slip on her face, her eyes opened to see Coach Martinez placing the mask on her face.
She felt Taissa grasp at her hand as everything begin to shake, making her want to throw up.
Veronica tried to soothe Taissa as everyone was screaming and crying.
Veronica looked over, seeing Laura Lee saying a prayer, Veronica took a deep breath, realizing that death was upon her, but before she knew it, she was losing consciousness.
"Veronica wake the fuck up!"
Veronica slowly opened her eyes, there was a hot, searing pain in her leg and stomach.. There was nothing but smoke, making the girls eyes and lungs burn.
Taissa shook her best friend urgently, trying to drag her out of her seat.
"Ow, Tai, please stop," she mumbled.
"Fuck, that's a lot of blood, come on Ronnie, you need to get up," Taissa helps the younger brunette out of her seat.
Taissa crawled to help Misty try to open the door, Veronica went to help, only to stop when she heard a familiar sob.
"Please God," the girl sobbed.
"Natalie? What are you doing here?"
Natalie looked up at the brunette, tears in her eyes, Veronica's parents had been out of town, leaving the girl home alone.
"C-can I come in please?"
Veronica was taken aback at the state of her friend. Natalie wasn't one to show vulnerability, especially not in front her teammates.
Her and Veronica hadn't even been that close, so the fact that the girl stood on her doorstep, tears about to spill down her face at any minute.
"Yeah, yeah of course,"
Natalie made her way inside, standing, waiting for Veronica to give her further instructions.
"Do, uh, do you like tea?"
Natalie looked at her confused, but hesitantly nodded.
Veronica made her way to the kitchen, Natalie followed her like a lost puppy, hesitantly sitting at the kitchen island.
Veronica had gone on her tippy toes, reaching into the cabinet where her mother kept the million of teas she liked to have stalked.
Veronica grabbed the one that she always drank after stressful days, it was a Herbal Tea, one that was always in the Howards Cabinet.
Veronica poured the boiling water in two mugs, letting the tea steep.
"We can uh, go to my room?"
Natalie didn't say anything, just nodded and followed Veronica as she carried the two mugs up, kicking her door open.
Natalie looked around at the girls bedroom, a sense of comfort washing over her.
Veronica sat on her bed, nodding for Natalie to join her.
"Are you going to tell me what's wrong?"
Veronica sat the two mugs on her nightstand, looking at the girl.
Natalie pushed her bangs out of her face, the tears began to pool down her face.
"Veronica, my- my dad," Natalie had to try to take a deep breath, but the sobs escaped her lips before she could stop it.
"My dad's dead Veronica," Natalie cried, "And it's my fault,"
Veronica wasn't good at comforting people, she wishes she was, but she wasn't.
Veronica let out a shaky breath, pulling Natalie into a hug, the girl clung onto her, her sobs echoed through her room, Veronica just continued to hold her as she sobbed.
Veronica turned around, seeing Natalie sob in her seat, a giant piece of metal had been trapping the girl, cutting painfully into her skin.
"Natalie!"
She tried to make her way over, wiping away the smoke, grasping onto the metal for support.
"Ronnie!?" Natalie cried.
"I'm here Nat," she coughed.
Veronica grasped the metal, "I need you to help me push it up! Can you do that?"
Natalie nodded, trying her best to push the metal off her, Veronica cried in pain as it scraped her face, but she kept pushing it up to get Natalie out.
Veronica grasped Natalie's arm, tugging her out of the way, freeing her from the metal death trap.
Natalie sobs as Veronica helps her up, pushing her out of the plane, pausing when she heard Van screaming for help.
"Go Nat! I'll be right behind you!"
Natalie hesitates, but allows Mari to push her out, Veronica joining Jackie and Shauna, trying to free Van.
"We need to go!" Jackie shouts.
"I'm not leaving Van!" Veronica yells, Jackie tugs Shauna away, Van was crying for help, being stuck between the seats.
"I got you Van, I'm not going to let us die," Veronica whispers, the smoke is filling her lungs, making her feel light headed.
She manages to get Van free, moving the two of them out of the way, but still being knocked down as the explosion erupted.
Veronica coughed and heaved, the smoke was filling her lungs, stars were beginning to dance in her vision.
"Stay with me Veronica," Van shouts, wrapping the girls arm around her shoulders, but it was too late, her eyes were slowly fluttering shut.
