An accident. That's what everyone said it was. But Matvey Angel knew that wasn't true.
"I'm sorry," Nikandr had said when he was driving himself and Matvey Angel back from Angelita's funeral.

Matvey Angel looked up from his phone. "For what?" he asked, head tilted to the side. He was still dressed in the suit he wore to the funeral, though his shirt was unbuttoned and his tie undone.

Nikandr took a breath, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. "For not being able to stop Angelita," he said quietly.

Matvey Angel sighed. "Dad...it wasn't your fault. She needed help that she didn't get." She tried to kill me, he didn't say.

"I should've helped her," Nikandr insisted. "I should've seen the signs." He leaned forward. "Now she's gone. Our family is gone."

"We still have Uncle Quinton," Matvey Angel pointed out. "And Mom's siblings."

"Quinton hasn't spoken to us since your mother died," Nikandr nearly snapped. "And your aunts and uncles don't count." He sped up. "We've lost everyone. Everyone. Well, now, we'll never lose anyone again."

Matvey Angel didn't like the sound of that. He gripped his seatbelt. "What are you talking about, Dad?" he asked cautiously, fear shooting through him.

Nikandr didn't answer. "I love you, Matvey Angel," he said before jerking the wheel and going off the road. Their bodies lurched forward as the car rammed into a tree.

Ambulances would arrive later. Matvey Angel would sit in silence as the EMTs pronounced his father dead from the accident.

Accident.

Yeah, right.
