TJ Haxton was a good boy.
That's what everyone said. So it must be true.
"You're such a good boy, TJ," Father Sims said when he asked the boy to stay and help him with something.
"You're my best student," Ada told him when he recited all the presidents.
"TJ, you're so good to your old mama," Angel said, drunkenly stroking his face.
TJ Haxton was a good boy.

TJ slid to the ground, his back to a tree. He'd told Angel what he did. Angel told him to run. So he ran.

Why did TJ shoot him?
TJ was a good boy. He'd always been a good boy. But good boys don't shoot people. Good boys don't kill.
Good boys don't enjoy watching the light fade from their victim's eyes.
He sobbed into his knees, shaking. "I'm a good boy," he whispered. "Mother Mary, Joseph, Jesus, God, if you can hear me, I promise I'm a good boy. I made a mistake. I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry I killed him. Please, Lord, forgive me of my sins..."
He fell forward, his face in the dirt, groveling at the feet of an invisible deity. "Please, Lord. I'm a good boy..."
