Three Days Later
[]
Although the new CEO, Lucious Lyon, had only been at the company for a few days now, he had already been trying to create some sort of order within the workplace.
Violet sat at her desk this morning, picking at a hangnail that had been bothering her since the day started. It was one of the multiple she had removed since the start of the week on Monday.
A coworker brushed by her desk, watching her fixation in doing this. Once she yanked it out, she released a quiet wince. "Pick all of your skin right off, why don't you?" She coworker teased, then continuing down the hallway and shaking their head afterwards. Violet only looked up and stared. They mumbled something underneath her breath, but she couldn't hear it completely. She only released a sigh.
Her desk phone ringing caused her to have a fright, and he grabbed the phone as if she was in a panic of what would happen if it rang a second longer. "Y-Yes, Mr. Lyon?" She asked after clearing her throat. "Violet, I need you to come here, please." He said. "Right away, Sir." She said, then standing up quickly from her desk and heading out of her office.
[]
The office was dead silent as she walked in. All that could be heard were her shoes with mile-wide heels hitting against the floor with thumps. She stood in front of the desk, and Mr. Lyon was sitting in his desk. His suit jacket was off, revealing a tucked in white button up formal shirt. One of his ankles was crossed, resting onto his knee. He held a pilot pen in his hand.
Violet noticed his expression, as he seemed to be lost in thought for some time even after she announced that she was there to help. He took a deep breath before speaking. "Do you agree that there is a...flaw in the way this company functions?" He asked.
Violet blinked multiple times while trying to understand what he was talking about. "A...flaw?" She asked, thinking to herself. "Yes." He said. He then stared at her for a few moments. He examined her outfit for the second time today. Slacks that went all the way down to her ankles. A long sleeve black shirt and the small thick low heels. She wore no accessories, and her hair was down as usual.
He looked away, then clicking the back of his pen two times. "Violet, how long have you been working here?" He asked. "Um...about four years Sir. Did I do something wrong?" She asked. He let out a single chuckle, likely thinking that she was joking.
"Did something wrong? You just got in here." He said. She looked down at her feet. "No, you didn't do anything wrong. But you've clearly been working here longer than I have. You know a lot about how things operate around here, right?" He asked.
"W-well I only have experience being an assistant." She said. "Hm..." He thought to himself about her response for a moment. He then sprang up from his seat, making her jump. He didn't notice this, however, because he had turned away from her and began to pace slowly in front of his office window.
Violet placed her hand onto her chest in some sort of relief. There was a long pause before Lucious spoke, staring down at the people outside on the ground. "Employees here are far too laid back for my liking. But I don't want to be a boss who is too strict for their own good." He said. He then turned to Violet, who remained in her same spot in front of his desk.
He pointed at her a single time. "Did you know that you weren't the only person late on Monday?" He said. "I wasn't?" Violet asked. "I counted seven. Seven employees during this week have been late. Meaning that requests from me or other departments get taken later. Meaning they will get fulfilled later, received later, and so makes us as a company seem as if we struggle with time management." He said. Violet gave a stiff nod.
"So I think that is what my first official order of duty should be." He said. Violet wasn't sure how she felt about this. She had never noticed that other employees being late was an issue, because she always only tried to make sure that she came on time herself. Her position was very different because she worked directly alongside the CEO. She had no other choice but to be on time.
"Violet." Said Lucious. "Yes, Sir?" She asked. "Tell me about the previous CEO. What was he like?" He asked. "Um...well the old CEO was very nice...but he was strict on certain things but not on others. Such as...tardiness..." She mumbled. "He retired due to old age, Sir." She added, then pulling down her shirt sleeve a little to indicate her awkward nature.
Lucious had noticed her fidgety state. He sat back down in his desk chair. "And how is your morning going?" He asked. "Um...fine..." She said. "Have you had your morning coffee yet?" He asked. She shook her head. He then stood up from the seat again. "I think that it's time I try the new coffee shop downstairs. Things are steady at this time of day it seems." He said, coolly, then walking over to the office door. He held it open for her. She turned around, staring at him. "Coming with, assistant?" He asked. She nodded, then briskly walking towards the door and out of the office. She thanked him for holding it open in a quiet tone.

The CEO decided to people-watch the office workers as he sat at a small table with Violet. Her hands held the small coffee as if they needed the heat. He took a simple muffin, but he hadn't touched it yet due to his observing.
She took only a few sips of the coffee, and he had glanced over at her once he broke his gaze from the people walking by. "Do you mind if I ask you something?" He asked. She nodded attentively. "You do mind?" He asked. "I don't mind..." She clarified.
"Are you afraid of dogs?" He asked. It wasn't the question she was expecting, but she looked down into her lap instead. "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable. I just remember your reaction on Monday. You seemed to be in a lot of fear." He said. "I discovered an alternative path to the building. One with less pedestrians. I was going to advise you to take it to avoid seeing more dogs." He said.
"I'm not afraid of dogs...just...those dogs..." She said. He could see the pieces of her skin that she had peeled off from around her fingers. He nodded slowly. "I see." He said. He changed the subject. "So, please do tell me more about the old CEO. Was he strict on deadlines?" Lucious asked. Violet shook her head. "Not really...I think that..." She trailed off.
Lucious furrowed his eyebrows. "Think what? Go on.." He said. She shook her head. "It's nothing..." She mumbled. "Well, you are my right hand woman, so your opinion surely matters on certain things." He said. Violet looked at him as if that sentence was alien to her.
"Is that not how it should be?" He asked. She didn't reply. She instead stood up, then grabbing her coffee and taking a step back. "Thank you for the coffee, Sir. But...I think that I should get back to work, now..." She said, then walking away. "Sure thing..." He said, bewildered by her reaction. He felt that he had caused her to feel uncomfortable. Her mannerisms were strange. He brushed it off and continued to speculate about how he can improve the company.

To Be Continued

Hopefully this was a good chapter for you all. I know it's somewhat short.
Why do you think that Violet appears to be uncomfortable around Mr. Lyon even though he is not bold towards her?
Do you think that Violet will become more comfortable over time?
Until next time!
