"Koo? Where have you been?"
The boy made a wobbly face before turning around. His momma was expecting a response. Her voice dripped with concern which doubled Koo's pain.
"Baby, are you okay? Momma is worried." Mrs.Kim went to engulf the silently crying boy in her warm embrace. She gently moved them on the couch and Koo hugged her tightly. His throat started to hurt more. Koo was afraid to tell his momma that he drank alcohol even though it was by mistake. But if his windpipe kept troubling him, he wouldn't be able to hide his pain any longer. Already his eyes were overflowing.
"Momma.." Koo whispered snuggling into the motherly warmth to seek comfort. "Boba, you are scaring me now." Mrs. Kim rested her cheek on Koo's head which was tucked under her neck. She felt the front of her shirt was being soaked by now. "Koo, did something happen, where were you earlier, please tell me, baby." She brushed Koo's hair back to look at his face. " Is it because of Taebear? " Koo shook his head instantly denying.
"Yeobo,, is Koo home or not yet?" Mr. Kim asked from his room. His loud voice made Koo flinch badly and a small mewl followed by a weak hiccup left his mouth unconsciously. Mrs.Kim's hold around him tightened on instinct. She rubbed her baby's back in soothing circles.
After a minute or so, "Mumma...hurts.." Koo's feeble voice reached her attentive ears. "What hurts baby?" She responded in a beat. Finally her baby spoke. Koo lifted his face, his spotless neck arched back and he placed his index finger on his exposed throat.
"Oh, my baby, my love why didn't you tell me before, wait here momma will get you soup and medicine, it's gonna be all fine, okay?" Koo nodded while pressing his eyes with his sweater paws to stop another gush of salty water. Mrs. Kim kissed Koo's flushed and tear-soaked cheeks one by one. The back of her eyes burned with emotion, staring down at his bubbly baby's dismal face and painfully swollen eyes.
She helped Koo lay down on the soft mattress of the couch and covered him with her shawl. She put on the TV to divert Koo's mind from pain. When she left for the Kitchen, her mind filled with unanswered questions. How come Koo's throat is hurting suddenly? He was all fine in the afternoon. Where has he been all the evening and why was he sneaking inside his own house? Koo never sneaked out like this before. He always takes her permission before going out. What was going on? Well, she will ask him but right now his health matters the most, so she jerked away all the questions and concentrated on making soup.
