Chapter 15: Singe's Past

"How is she, doc?! Is she going to be alright?!"

After the events that had unfolded back at the village, Leopold and his friends had taken Emerald to the Spirit Kingdom. Leopold had once heard Lemia say that the doctors in the kingdom were some of the best there were, so he had thought it best to take Emerald to them so that her wound could be treated.

However...

"It isn't good..." the doctor told Leopold. He pointed to the now bandaged wound her stomach possessed and sighed. "There is a lot of damage to her stomach as well as other vital organs... Even if she does survive, it may take somewhere between five to twenty years to recover fully. There's even a chance that her ability to wield magic may be severed completely."

Leopold gritted his teeth. "Is there nothing more you can do for her?!" He was frustrated. If only he had been able to realize what was happening sooner...

"What did she do to deserve any of this?!"

"I need to do some more surgery on her, so I would ask that you step outside for a while." the doctor told Leopold, then turning back to his work.

Looking at the unconscious body of Emerald one last time, Leopold turned to the exit behind him and walked through it. When outside in the hallway of the hospital, he looked to see Leviathan and Diablo sitting on a bench outside the room.

When spotting Leopold, Leviathan got to his feet and rushed over to him. "How is it?! Is she going to be alright?! Can the doctors help her?!" His face was filled with worry.

Leopold frowned. "I... don't know." He took a short deep breath to steady himself and then looked his friend in the eyes. "The doctors say that she should survive, but it may take some time to fully recover from her injuries. Also... there is a possibility that she may lose the ability to use magic."

Taking a step back in shock, Leviathan's eyes widened. "W-What... She'll lose the ability to use magic?!" He went and sat back on the bench, eyes staring down at the floor now. "I see... Is that so..."

Leopold narrowed his eyes. "That damned Singe... The next time that I see that bastard, I'll make sure he gets a piece of my mind..."  He couldn't believe that they had trusted him all this time! "Makes sense why he was so weary of me the first time we met. I should have realized!"

Taking one more breath, Leopold looked over at the other person sitting on the bench with Leviathan. "Diablo, could you do me a favor and request an audience with the king? I wanted to ask him for something..."

Diablo got up from his seat and bowed to Leopold. "Of course, master. Leave it to me." 

"And could you try to put a little emotion in your words when requesting this?"

"Not possible."

While Leopold started to plan what he and the others would do next, others some distance from the Spirit Kingdom were planning a scheme of their own...

Singe paced back and forth as we waited to meet with his boss. Since they hadn't been able to kill Emerald as requested, the boy was sure that he was going to receive the death penalty for his actions.

"Maybe I can convince him to spare Lucy and just take my life. I don't want to betray Master Kai, but I also don't want to betray her either..."

When Singe was a small boy of only ten years old, he lost his family when their house caught on fire. For a little while after, he wandered the land of Vera in search of a new place he could call "home". However, it took some time to arrive at this place...
