Volt eyed the guards at every entrance that he could see from the angle he was standing at, frustrated on how to get in.
"Hey...uh..." Volt decided to risk it and go up to the guards at one of the side entrances. I can blitz them anyways. They won't catch me.
Will they?
"What do you need?" Surprisingly, the guards were pretty respectful.
"Um...I was wondering if I could see the Mayor. Mr. Gladiator?" Volt said, not hoping for much.
"What's your name, sir?" The other guard asked.
"Um...Bon."
Shoot, why did I say that!?
"Bon?" Both of them looked at each other. "Well, we don't have the schedule or visitor log, so we can't verify."
"Mr. Gladiator will know, I'm sure. I'm...his daughter's friend's boyfriend." Volt admitted.
"Interesting chain of relation, well, you can go in. Just make sure to go to the front desk and check yourself in. Verification procedures." The first one shrugged and the second one opened the door with a smile.
"Yeah...!" Volt nodded, his expression full of gratitude and relief.
He trotted in politely before the door closed completely behind him before carefully trotting down the long hallway.
What if I just...
He stopped in his tracks at the sight of the enormous lobby. There weren't many guests or workers, and Volt instantly spotted the front desk. The Mon who stood behind was zoning out and staring into a huge window outside. Volt glanced back and forth, from the Mon to the direction that they were looking at.
GOGOGOGOGO!!1!!!!!!1!!
Volt started running as fast as he could, all the way up the staircase since the elevator was too risky for him. The Mon behind the desk didn't react, and Volt was glad that they didn't hear or see him dash by. He stopped at the top of the staircase and realized that he had to go into a stairwell to go up, and it was past the way busier employee-only area. He tried to look for an alternative route to get there other than rushing his way right through the middle path of the place and probably going to get chased down after someone had spotted him.
Wait, I really don't think Bonfire and Willow were led down this path to interrupt the employees, they've had to go a different path...
Elevator. Of course.
Volt turned around, just in time to see the elevator doors open and two Mons trotting out while chatting about something. He decided to use the elevator and went over to it as confidently as he could.
"Hey, I've never seen you here before!" one of them waved. "Which department ya at?"
Volt froze in his tracks and pointed to himself while tilting his head.
"Yup, you!" the other one cheered with a grin before both came over. "Which department do you work in?"
The Jolteon had an idea and suddenly did some random movements with his paws. The Mons looked at each other with confusion.
"I'm sorry, what do you mean by that?"
Volt shook his head, his face full of dismay. The two workers realized what Volt meant.
"You're mute...!? Oh my gosh...we're so sorry! We...uh...hey, do you have paper?" one of them turned to the other.
Volt forced a smile before waving and going towards the elevator again.
"Wait, do you need help!?" the other one called out, concerned for Volt's well-being.
The Jolteon turned his head to shake it before smiling again and getting in the elevator. He slammed his paw on the close-door button and spammed it desperately, hoping that he didn't have to deal with another similar encounter.
Where am I supposed to go again?
Volt froze. He could've asked the two from before and figured out where to go, but he didn't think of that. The Jolteon desperately slammed on the open-door button, but it was too late. After spamming it, he accidentally misclicked and hit the main floor button. Before he could take off his paw and realize what he had just done, there was already a sinking feeling in his stomach, along with the sinking of the elevator cart from the rails.
Dang it!
"So you're the one that went viral for beating up a customer, hm? And you're the manager?" A Gallade greeted from his desk after the assistant opened the door for Bonfire and Willow.
"At your humble service, sir." Bonfire said with a forced smile.
"I wouldn't have imagined anyone like you doing all the gruesome work because of a simple insult." the mayor smiled and gestured for the two to sit down.
"I don't think I was able to imagine that until I did it," the Flareon's forced smile grew a little, but there was a small pinch of annoyance in his voice. "Some actions can't be expected from an individual until it's performed by the same one, no?"
"Well said and most definitely agreed upon."
"Excuse me, I need a quick moment. So sorry." Willow gave Bonfire's paw a small squeeze before looking straight into Gladiator's eyes.
The Mayor nodded. "Don't worry about it, feel free to take your time if you need it."
"Thank you so much." Willow said before leaving the room quickly.
Mr. Gladiator turned to Bonfire again. "So, since the interviewers yielded absolutely nothing from you, I would like to ask you about the situation myself, just to satisfy the curiosity that I've had since the event. Would you mind?"
The Flareon kept his smile from turning into a sour one. "There's not much to tell you, sir. This was quite straightforward in nature."
"So she insulted you and you attacked her in a defense system?" Gladiator inquired.
Bonfire sighed. "Well, no-"
The mayor smiled. "So there is something to tell me?"
"Well, I thought that the Mayor wouldn't dwell on details as much." Bonfire replied calmly.
"I've always looked at both pictures of the situation," Gladiator kept his smile, the Flareon able to recognize it from posters and advertisements and sponsorships on big screens that stuck out from tall buildings. "Maybe I was born with it, maybe I was influenced by my caretakers...either way, I would love to get the full picture that the interviewers couldn't. Well, what'd she insult you about?"
"She...didn't insult me." Bonfire glanced to the side, feeling a bit awkward.
Gladiator's eyes widened a little in surprise. "Your girlfriend, then?"
"My girlfr-...Willow?"
"The Leafeon that came with you, yes." the Gallade leaned back a little. "Did the customer insult your girlfriend?"
"She's-...yeah, the customer did insult her." Bonfire's face went red with embarrassment.
"Ah, that makes more sense then. You do seem quite protective of your girlfriend. Good one for that, always protect her from this cruel, cruel world..." Gladiator stared at the plant by the door for a brief moment.
Suddenly, the door opened and Gladiator looked up. Willow stood there, holding a plate with her paw covered by a piece of newspaper and an awkward smile on her face.
"Sorry, I had to ask your assistant for a plate. Sir, are you hungry?" Willow asked.
Bonfire turned around and tried to signal the Leafeon to be less blunt, but she didn't understand.
"Yes, I actually am pretty hungry." the mayor smiled while Willow sat back down on her seat. "The meeting earlier drained a lot of my fullness from breakfast. Why'd you ask?"
"Well..." Willow whacked Bonfire's paw before he loosened his grip on the box of leftover pastries and gave it to the Leafeon. "We decided to bring a little something for you in case something like this did happen."
Willow opened the box and carefully took out each pastry, placing them on the plate before closing the box and slowly pushing it towards the Gallade. "Hope you like them!"
The elevator door opened and Volt was back in the main lobby. This time, the same Mon by the desk turned and saw the Jolteon.
Why am I doing this anyways? For 50 Coins that my little sister probably won't ever pay me?
Volt groaned before stepping out and trotted to the main entrance, the Mon's eyes on him the entire time. Surprisingly, when he exited, the guards didn't ask him any questions other than staring at him until he trotted slowly out of sight. The Jolteon turned around to make sure that he wasn't being looked at before charging up a rush and sped all the way back without stopping at any point.
"Hah, you owe me 50 Coins!" Dewdrop yelled out the moment the door clicked open and Volt came in.
"No, I'm not risking my entire reputation of being blacklisted there for sneaking in!" Volt spat. "I nearly got caught, like, three times!"
"You probably just don't wanna gamble with me cause you know I'd be right." Dewdrop rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Since you're my brother, we can let this deal go."
"Gladly." Volt narrowed his eyes. "My reputation's more important than 50 Coins that I'll never get."
"I'm paying you the 50 Coins. Well, I was. Until you called it off." the Vaporeon shrugged.
"No, I know you won't. You probably owe me like, 500 by now." Volt snapped. "Not a Coin paid back."
"I don't owe you anything," the little sister shook her head furiously. "You're making stuff up!"
"Okay, can you make the attacking a little less obvious?" the Jolteon stifled a laugh. "That makes your lying so much more noticeable."
"Dude, just shut up." Dewdrop leaned back on the sofa and turned away from her brother.
The Jolteon sat down on the rug and had a look of victory on his face. "You're just mad because you know I'm right and you can't deny anything."
The Vaporeon crossed her arms. "I can still deny if I wanted to, I'm just not going to waste time on you."
"Yeah, everyone can deny lies knowing it's one, so can you." Volt shrugged.
"Okay, okay, I admit that I do owe you a bunch of Coins, I'm sorry." Dewdrop turned to look at her brother and sighed defeatedly.
"All good, Sis, just pay me back if you can. Or I'll sell some of your plushies for my Coins back." Volt joked with a sly grin that made him seem serious somehow.
"NOOO!" the Vaporeon wailed at the top of her lungs. "DON'TTT!"
"OKAY, OKAY!" Volt yelled, trying to get her sister to stop screaming. "I WAS JUST JOKING AROUND!"
"Okay!" Dewdrop grinned and was quiet almost immediately.
"Geez, you're so loud..." Volt shook his head and sighed. "Calm down."
"No."
