Johnny stood right behind me with his beret on, he was the only other person with a good sense of style like myself. "Justice honey, you don't need an agent" he sounded so sure.
"Yes Johnny, I've never done this before an agent can really help me more than you think" I said while styling the woman's hair. I pulled the hot comb on her hair slowly, pulling towards myself.
"Justice, I have a friend of a friend" he spoke passionately over my shoulder. "And this friend was backstabbed by an agent, trust me Justice. Sweety you have the talent and brains to do this by yourself. Those agents can be greedy and manipulative"
"Maybe I should talk to my man first before I make that decision"
"Your man" my client sing. "Don't depend on your man to make your own decisions" she said stern and proud. "Trust me, I did the same and now I hate my life"
"Justice she's right, you're not tied to that man. You don't have a baby by him and you're not wearing a ring. The only person that can make decisions for you is you" Amira said interfering our conversation.
"Justice didn't I teach you better than that" Jessie said strong.
"Never mind, pretend I didn't say nothing" I fussed above a feather.
Iesha didn't say anything but shake her head. I knew she had something to say, knowing her. The girl always had a smart comment, especially when it came to myself. I had a feeling something was off and grew suspicious as the work day went on.
"How was your Thanksgiving Iesha" I asked walked with her to our apartment building.
"It's was cool, how was yours?"
"Oh, mines was great" I wore a subtle smile just thinking about it. "I met Chris's mother, unfortunately his sister couldn't make it"
I glanced at Iesha, she ignored my stare as we stopped in front of the building. "That's nice" she said on her way up the building steps to the door.
"How are things with you and Q"
"I'm scared to tell him how I feel J and it's killing me" she whined on her way to the elevator.
"Why?"
She leaned into the wall of the elevator and gave me a sarcastic look. "I'm afraid he'll just turn me down J, let's be real" she whined. "He's different"
"You think you can change him, even Amira warned you about him" I said pressing the button to our floor.
"You and Johnny get to fall in love but I can't get the man I love to love me back" she spoke defeated.
I walked up to her invading her personal space holding onto her shoulders. "At least he's honest and telling you to your face he's seeing other women, rather than him settling down just to do it behind your back"
"Is that supposed to make me feel better" as she spoke the elevator door binged and opened.
That night was awkward between us, I cuddled with white-boy on the couch while Iesha went out. She said she was going to the club to make Q jealous while I checked the voice mail for any calls from the various of agents in New York City. Then I remembered Chris feeling reminiscing what joy I felt being in his presence, so I dialed him.
Listening to the phone pick up on the other end was exciting to hear. I sat at the edge of the couch cushion, ready to hear his voice. "Hey Justice" he said dry without a pet name. I was excepting to be called baby or my favorite beautiful.
"What's the matter with you today" I asked defensively.
"I had a really long fucking day today" he sounded cranky over the phone using his harsh tone.
