Jessie found two new employees to help around the shop. Tamika and Sam, they were both east coast girls. Tamika was from New Jersey but moved to the city for work while Sam was a brown skin sister from the city, she was a singer before a beautician.
She wants to sing at the Apollo someday. Sams chair was next to mine and Tamika sat across from her, next to Iesha. With my new coworkers around, that gave Iesha and I more time off. One day I came in the afternoon while they started before me that morning.
On my walk to work, I crossed the street at the red light. With my essentials on my shoulder in my black bag, I held my hands in each of my black jean pockets. From head to toe I wore black, I saw the world through the black lenses of my glasses.
The sun was out, yet it was still a cold day. Voices chatted and laughs scattered on my stroll down the street. I was almost there, as I approached the shop on my walk. I watched the door to the barbershop open, out came with a familiar appearance. I noticed him at the sight of his side profile and masculine jawline.
He exited the shop and began on his stroll with his back facing me. I watched from behind as he stopped his walk in front of Jessie's salon. He moved his head back and forth as if he was looking for me. I stopped in my tracks feeling my heart pace and butterflies began to flutter in my stomach.
The sight of him made me weak, just like his touch. Knowing he wanted to see me, made me weaker. It was a good feeling, but that voice in the back of my head told me he deserved better. So I stayed a few feet back until he continued on his walk.
Once he was gone I ran into the shop. I knew I couldn't avoid him for long, since his barbershop is right next door to my shop. My first appointment for the day was with Felicia's friend, Kelly. Honestly I was excited to get her over with and out of my chair before she even sat in it.
I got in and settled my stuff like normal. "Are you ready for your new client" Iesha questioned walking up to my station.
I looked up from my bag and into her hazel stare. "I'm as ready as I need to be I guess" I spoke dry.
She scoffed gasping and took one step closer to me. "Come on J, Felicia tips big. So I know her friend will, look at the bright side" she said in her friendly tone.
"If you say so" I shrugged.
"What's the matter Justice" Amira questioned from her seat. She sat underneath a blow dryer looking up at me.
I sighed before even speaking feeling like I could open up to her. "You know that loud ghetto girl that be coming here?" She made a face in disgust. "Yeah, that one, she recommended her friend to me and she's coming in soon"
She hissed like felt bad for me shaking her head. "Good luck girl" she said sing-song.
