"Lucas, I am Mr. Rennis, I will be your Chemistry teacher for the term, I trust that you'll try your best to keep up," he continued.
I nodded, my nerves increasing with each passing moment.
"For today's lesson, you'll be working with the person beside you so get used to them because they will be your final partner for the rest of the term."I turned my head to sneak a look at the boy beside who'd just intentionally blew me off, great, I thought sarcastically to myself.
As the teacher began to distribute eggs to each pair, he explained that, "Today, we'll be observing the effect of osmosis on egg membranes when submerged into different solutions."As the experiment commenced, I worked in silence, my focus solely on the task at hand. The silence between us was almost deafening as I took notice of the numerous quiet mumbles between lab partners around us.
"I'm Lucas,"
I said after working up the strength to speak again.
"Yeah, I think the teacher already made that quite clear."
He uttered softly, to my surprise. His tone was harsh and sarcasm laced every syllable of his words.Feeling disheartened, I decided to keep quiet for the rest of the experiment, but to my surprise, he sighed before uttering another response,
"Alec.""So you do speak,"
I mused in reply.
"Well, obviously,"
he spoke again. Before I could respond, the teacher intervened, addressing the class, "Try to keep your conversations based on the task at hand, please." It was obvious that his words were directed at us. Alec returned to his deep focus on the work, his eyes holding a glimmer of mystery.
We continued working on the experiment, exchanging hushed conversations focused solely on the task. We continued like that until the bell rang, signaling the end of the class. I turned toward him, ready to say something else, but he abruptly stood up and left the class.
I stared in shock at his retreating figure before scanning over the timetable I'd gotten from my locker to see P.E listed as the next class along with directions to the locker rooms from my school map.I managed to make my way there and searched for my locker where a new uniform waited within. While sitting on one of the benches tying the laces of my sneakers my mom had insisted on me bringing in case I needed them, I overheard conversations behind me between the other boys.
Curiously, I turned to glance, and my eyes met with those of a guy in the middle of changing.Embarrassed my face turned bright red as I quickly looked away but to my surprise, he approached me
"You like what you see, new kid?"
He teased.
"No, I wasn't looking. I just-"
I stumbled over my words.Just then, Tyler stepped in with a friendly smile, coming to my aid. "Leave the new kid alone, Nick," he said. The guy-Nick-chuckled,
"I was just having some fun,"
He teased before walking away.
