The drive was extremely long, but I didn't mind, especially not after Tyler had falling asleep on my shoulder.
It was around 1 a.m when we finally got to Michigan; although I had to estimate since I didn't have my phone, maybe not having it was a good thing, though, I wouldn't be too distracted by the anonymous text.
The bus pulled into the dimly lit parking lot of a roadside motel. The flickering neon sign cast an eerie glow, creating a subdued atmosphere. The air was cool, carrying distant city sounds blending with the occasional hum of passing cars on the nearby highway.
The motel itself was weathered and beaten, with fading paint and a slightly worn exterior. The buzzing of a flickering streetlamp illuminated the path to the entrance, revealing a row of doors leading to individual rooms.
Stepping off the bus, the small courtyard surrounded us, low buildings enclosing the space. The distant glow of city lights on the horizon hinted at the nearby urban landscape.
The motel's lobby beckoned us, a dim light emanating from the glass door. Inside, the check-in counter held a faded charm, and the sound of a faint television hummed from a corner. The scent of old wood and a hint of stale cigarette smoke lingered in the air.
"Alright, pick your pairs! Let's get this over with."
Coach said with a tone that sounded eager to be done with this part.My eyes instinctively sought out Tyler, who was already glancing in my direction. I felt a sense of relief.
But then I noticed Nick, who was heading straight for us. He had that cocky grin plastered on his face, the one that always made me tense up. But as he got closer, something shifted. His confident stride faltered, and his expression changed-eyes widening in surprise as if he'd seen something that stopped him in his tracks.
I barely had time to register the look on Nick's face before Tyler stepped up beside me, his presence calming the sudden spike of anxiety that had started to build. Whatever had thrown Nick off, I brushed it aside. It wasn't important.
We found our room and stepped inside, the door closing behind us with a soft click.
The motel room was simple but functional. Two beds were neatly made with white sheets, and a small table stood beneath a framed landscape painting. The soft glow of the bedside lamp added a touch of warmth, contrasting with the neon lights filtering through the curtains.
