My work days were blending. I wasn't sure what day it was, not that it mattered.
Working for myself, every day was the same. Weekends, meaningless. Ally and I didn't have kids. We had no one to care for other than our cats. Monday, Saturday, Sunday, Thursday, they all appeared to the same to me.
I was back in the club, this time reviewing the data collected throughout the weeks of testing. The retinal eye capture system was performing better than expected. Many of the newer girls were using it almost exclusively to up their gains going to the bar and reading the glowing iPad screen seeing which tables had men poised near perfect in their altered state.
Other girls, the pros, like Vera, relied on their tried and true tactics. By now however Vera had grown a bit cooly toward the tech idea, as if it was infringing on her own domain.
Most of the camera control resided in the DJ booth toward the back of the club. It was early about 8pm, what day, no idea. I was under the center console of the DJ booth attempting to address a wiring problem. While the data was looking good, we weren't getting enough data from one side of the club, like a few cameras off or something wrong in the wiring.
Veer passed on this kind of manual labor. He would check in from time to time but let this project be run by myself. We took turns on owning clients. He knew I had more at stake here than just this camera data project.
"You know this isn't real.." Veer said to me while I was under the console, looking for the green wire. He was crouched down staring at me, attempting to reason with me.
"The data is real, its working man." I replied back, reaching into an enclosed hole with wires spewing out. I didn't want to continue losing data, losing time, losing bankable conversion. Every time a dancer could convert off my technology, it let me play the role of game keeper, dungeon master.
"Take care my man, I have to check on that project." Veer said standing up, seeing only his knees, walking away. That project I wonder? Which one? We had many.
I found the broken wire. Ah ha! I exclaimed, striping it, and rewiring the cable structure. A faint tap on my left ankle occurred. Looking over as I wrapped the wiring harness I saw a pair of heels, clearly defined ankles, and legs that just went up.
"Hey..." Vera said. "Whatcha doing? Working on your "tech-no-logy" she said sarcastically. "You're girl broken down there?" she laughed a bit.
She'd always spell out "tech-no-lo-gy" to me when said the word, making fun of my craft, trying to bait me into conversation, perhaps a dance, or maybe I'd stumble again into a VIP. Or maybe something simpler, just conversation, sipping my beer and reminding me I loved tequila shots- but did I, for her, I would drink nearly anything.
She didn't bend at the knees or crouch down. She could basically see through walls, peering through the center console that covered me as I wired the harness. I made eye contact with her via telepathy.
"Yep, gotta get this old gal working ya know." I retorted back. Unfazed by her attempts.
"I think I like you lying down.." she said, "on your back. Its time you picked up a few bruises working at this place."
Vera would often tell me of the true work it took to climb the pole or worse perform a number of moves ringside for a man that would never part with a measly dollar. Who know's what happened in the VIP room- did men try and do things I just didn't want to think about- I'm sure. And did she ever get sucked into that web, even in her simulation, one she would control, or did the cash overtake her, claim her as a victim that night. I wondered.
