Narrator:
A smile lit up Crescent's face. He had done it! Vinny had accepted him as his friend. He had never felt so happy.
His sockets widened like saucers, filled with amazement. Vinny, the adorable little rabbit with her cotton-soft fur, was rubbing against his bony finger as if seeking refuge in him. Crescent's soul was pounding, a mixture of excitement and fear. He had never experienced such a deep connection with an animal.
Carefully, he tried to move his hand slightly, but Vinny didn't move away from him. Faced with such an action, Crescent remained motionless, afraid of breaking the moment.
Crescent, with his pupils full of uncertainty, directed his gaze towards his mother. His jaw opened slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but no sound came out of his throat. In his view, you could read a question: What should I do?
Killer, sensing the young prince's confusion, smiled slightly and brought his hand to his head, caressing it gently. "See, I told you she'd like you. You two are very good friends now" he said softly, his gaze fixed on the tender scene unfolding before him. Crescent smiled, relieved and happy. It was as if they shared a special secret, a unique moment that brought them together even more.
~A few minutes later~
Killer looked at Crescent and Vinny with a wistful smile. Rays of afternoon sunlight filtered through the window, illuminating the bunny's soft fur as she snuggled into Crescent's chest. The contrast between the darkness of the room and the warmth of that moment was evident.
"I never thought Vinny would warm up to someone so quickly" he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I remember when Nightmare saw her for the first time. The poor thing almost fainted from fright!" he spoke, laughing a little at the last part.
'That was also the day I stayed up all night...' he thought 'Vinny curled up in the same way as she does now in my belly, shaking like a leaf... as if she was trying to protect the small being that had just begun to grow in me...' the shadow of a memory crossed his mind, a painful memory that he thought had faded with time, causing his expression to disfigure for a second.
''With Dust and Horror it was a little better, but it still took them months to gain her trust, and even then, she only let them pet her with difficulty once a week. And now, here she is, snuggled into your chest as if you were her pillow. I've never seen her like this! You're the second person she likes the most, after me, of course.'' he said, trying to divert his thoughts from the negative memories that came one after another. ''I think you've found a very special friend. Vinny is very selective about the people she lets into her life. The fact that she accepted you so quickly says a lot about you" he flattered, gently caressing the minor's head.
Crescent immersed himself in that caress, closing his sockets and letting the feeling of security surround him completely. A comforting warmth spread through him, dispelling any sense of doubt or fear. It was as if his mother's simple action was capable of healing any wound.
Vinny stretched and yawned as she woke up from her short nap, opening her big brown eyes. Then, she looked at Crescent and Killer curiously.
Killer took advantage of the moment to propose a game. "Crescent, how about the three of us play hide-and-seek?" he asked with a smile.
"But how? Rabbits don't know how to play hide-and-seek" Crescent frowned, confused.
The killer laughed at Crescent's question. "Vinny is a lot smarter than she looks. In fact, she's very good at hiding. I've taught her some tricks to protect herself from predators, so she has an incredible sense of smell and knows how to find the best hiding places. I assure you that she will surprise you!" boasted the aforementioned.
Crescent's pupils widened in disbelief. "A rabbit? Playing hide-and-seek? That's ridiculous!" he exclaimed and shook his head, denying the fact with certainty. For him, the idea was as absurd as believing that a fish could fly, he had already overcome that phase a long time ago.
''Do you think so?'' Killer asked amused ''We'll see...'' he whispered.
~Some time later~
After several hours of playing, Crescent was exhausted but also amused. He had been tricked time and time again by Vinny, who always managed to find him before he found her.
At the beginning of the game, Crescent enthusiastically offered to be the one to look for Vinny. "You'll see how I find her in no time" he stated confidently, his chest puffed with pride. However, as the minutes passed and Vinny still didn't show up, his confidence began to waver. He looked under the rocks, behind the bushes, in the trees, but nothing. Sweat began to break out on his forehead and his breathing quickened. Twenty minutes later, exhausted and with wounded pride, he sat on the floor. A few minutes later, he asked for a rematch.
They continued like this for a long time, changing roles, but the result was the same. All while Killer just watched in amusement.
"You beat me, Vinny" he admitted with a tired smile.
"I already told you she was very good" Killer smiled.
After so much adrenaline, the three went back inside to take a break. In a short time they took a bath and began to eat dinner. It is worth mentioning that dinner was already served and this made Killer feel more restless.
''How about you go to your room now and tell Vinny a story while I go out for a moment?" Killer suggested to the young prince.
''Okay!'' the little boy responded enthusiastically, leaving the rabbit on his bed while he reviewed which book would be the most appropriate for his new friend, deciding on the book: Alice in Wonderland.
Being sure that Crescent would be entertained, Killer headed towards Nightmare's office with a firm step. His soul was beating strongly. He knew this conversation would be difficult, but he also knew it was necessary. He took a deep breath and raised his hand to knock on the door.
