Killer's POV:
A barely audible rustle sounded at the door, causing my gaze to instinctively turn toward the source of the sound. I inhaled and exhaled, trying to calm the whirlwind of emotions flooding my mind. I had a vague idea of who might be on the other side, someone who was undoubtedly another worry.
"The door's open..." I said, my voice surprisingly softer.
The door opened slowly, revealing little Crescent. His movements were more cautious than usual, and his nervous gaze avoided mine.
"Mom?" he asked, his voice echoing in the silence.
There it was, a simple one-syllable word, yet so complex that its meaning made my soul leap out of its place.
"Yes, young Crescent?" I replied, trying to keep my emotions in check.
"You've looked... strange since this morning..." he murmured, almost inaudibly.
'Ah... of course,' I thought ironically. 'No wonder he noticed. I've spent all morning lost in thought; he must have seen me staring into space like an idiot.'
"It's nothing... I've just had a lot on my mind" I replied, though my tone didn't seem to convince him.
Resigned, I got out of bed, picked him up, and settled him on my lap.
"Really, it's nothing," I repeated, but I could see in his pupils that he still didn't believe me.
Trapped in that situation, I couldn't help but admire the creature before me.
'Those light blue pupils, round and bright, so similar to those of that terrible being to whom I gave everything, but with a differentiating, childlike, and innocent touch,' I mused as I gently stroked beneath the child's sockets. 'That bone-colored complexion, a lighter shade, and his brave demeanor, screamed with all their might that he was his son' I concluded, gently squeezing his cheekbones, feeling my own facial bones curve into a slight smile. 'I wondered if my little one would have had inherited a similar appearance, his same size, that defiant attitude... if he would possess his same powers. But it all came down to a maybe, nothing more and nothing less' I thought, my smile slowly fading.
"Mom?" Crescent asked, interrupting my thoughts.
'What stupid thing am I thinking in front of this kid?' I mentally scolded myself.
"What are you thinking about?" he insisted, his voice small but firm.
"It's just... something your Uncle Cross and Error said" I replied without thinking, feeling my mind wanting to plunge into a sea of doubt again.
"Something they said?" Crescent repeated, frowning slightly in confusion. His fixed gaze made me feel like I was being interrogated.
'Damn it, why did I say that?' I thought, berating my recklessness.
"Forget it, they just said silly things" I said, trying to change the subject, but my voice came out weaker than I expected.
"Mom, do you know that I can see what you're feeling?" Crescent asked, staring at me intently, as if by doing so he could read my mind.
'Being Nightmare's son, it was to be expected' I thought, resigned.
I nodded.
"Is it about Dad?" he asked bluntly.
I remained silent, unable to formulate an answer. His question had caught me completely off guard.
'This kid...' I thought, surprised. 'How did he figure it out? How can he be so perceptive at his age?'
