Killer's POV:
The morning progressed somewhat slowly. The clink that could be heard from the cutlery touching the plates was torturous since it made it easier to amplify the restlessness I felt when I couldn't stop thinking about the boss's absence. Crescent, very oblivious to my thoughts, devoured his breakfast quickly while talking non-stop about all the things he wanted to do with Vinny once he met her.
'Why didn't he show up today?' The question echoed in my mind with every bite I took.
It was unusual for the boss to miss an occasion involving Crescent, especially when he knew how much it meant to a child as young as the young prince to spend time with his father.
The doubt didn't leave my mind 'What if the boss really doesn't care as much about his son as I thought? Crescent seems so calm about this situation, don't tell me he's used to being without his father' I thought uneasily 'Or worse, being alone without anyone to take care of him' I rambled worriedly.
'Stop it, Killer!' I mentally scolded myself. 'Stop thinking so much, you already decided to confront him after going to see Vinny' I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. The image of my adorable Vinny, with his snow-white fur and brown spots as if playing so much in the meadow marked her for life appeared in my mind, bringing enough calm to focus on finishing eating.
With a last sip of milk, Crescent placed the glass on the table with a smile that lit up his entire face. "I'm done, Mom! I want to meet Vinny! Can we go now?" His pupils shone with anticipation, infecting me with his enthusiasm.
"Okay young prince. I promise you that you will love Vinny" I smiled and nodded.
Narrator:
Killer took Crescent by the hand and together they began to walk through the long corridors of the castle. The stone walls, adorned with ancient tapestries and the lamps that illuminated the path created a mysterious and exciting atmosphere for the little prince. The killer's room was not far away so they reached their destination in a few minutes.
Upon entering the room, Crescent couldn't help but frown. It was the first time he entered and it turned out to be much smaller than he had imagined. A single bed, a small closet, and a nightstand took up almost all of the space. He had imagined a place larger, more luxurious and worthy of a prince's mother.
Killer interrupted Crescent's thoughts by touching his shoulder and gesturing for him to look towards the nightstand. "I think someone is eager to meet you" he said, pointing. There, perched in a small cage, was the reason for his visit. A tiny rabbit with white fur and brown spots who was taking her first portion of water and food of the day.
With a cry of joy, Crescent launched himself towards the cage. Vinny, startled by the noise, quickly hid in her little wooden house. The rabbit's big brown eyes peered out, cautiously observing the new visitor.
Killer couldn't help but let out a soft laugh. "Don't be sad" Killer said, gently stroking Crescent's shoulder as he noticed the little boy's downcast countenance. "Vinny is a little shy at first, but you'll see how she warms up to you" he spoked in a soft and reassuring voice.
The killer put his hand towards the cage, ''Vinny'' he called the rabbit with a sweet tone.
Hearing the familiar voice of his owner, Vinny cautiously peeked his head out of the little house. Her ears twitched as she watched Crescent.
With gentle movements, Killer opened the cage door. He extended his hand, palm up, and waited. His gaze softened as he saw Vinny watching him warily. At first, Vinny was hesitant. Her big brown eyes scanned Crescent, then Killer, and finally settled on the outstretched hand. With a small jump, she dropped into Killer's palm, rubbing her head against his hand in a gesture of trust.
Crescent watched the scene with a mixture of amazement and envy. He had never seen his mother acting so soft and loving. The little rabbit seemed to be the center of his world. A knot formed in his chest making him feel uncomfortable. Why did his mother treat him so differently? However, seeing the trust with which Vinny snuggled into Killer's hand, a small spark of hope ignited inside him. Maybe, just maybe, he could find a place in his mother's heart too.
The young prince took momentum and wrapped his arms around his mother's legs. Killer was surprised by Crescent's sudden hug. He thought that the little boy simply wanted to see Vinny better, so he pulled him even closer to him, positioning them both in front of each other.
Crescent's bright pupils and Vinny's beady oval eyes met. The rabbit blinked slowly, tilting her head to the side. It was as if they were asking each other who the other was.
The rabbit's tender gesture destroyed all previous feelings of envy, giving him the courage to say hello.
''Hello, Vinny. I'm Crescent. Do you want to be my friend?' he said timidly, extending his finger towards the rabbit. Vinny sniffed Crescent's finger curiously, then gently rubbed her head against it. It was a sign of acceptance.
