Chapter 13: the past

The medics got her stable enough to move and loaded her into the rig but they wouldn't let Spencer ride with them as they needed their space because she was still in critical condition. Obviously Spencer didn't like that but had no choice.

So instead he marched over to one of the cars. "Reid!" Spencer didn't listen to hotch and kept going until he came over and physically stopped him. "You're not driving"

"Aaron! I need to get to the hospital" Spencer said in anger.

"Give me your keys, I'll drive you're in no state to" hotch said firmly. Spencer hesitated before handing his keys over.

"Hotch what do you want us to do?" JJ came over.

"Wait until Morgan makes the arrest on the second man then you're free to make your way to the hospital" he instructed.

The car ride was silent the whole way to the hospital when they got their they went to front desk and told that jessica was just taken up to surgery so they went to the waiting room and waited for the rest of the team to arrive.
Spencer just sat with his head in his hands.

"She's gonna be alright Spencer" hitch said supportively.

"You don't know that" he rubs his eyes which we're now red and puffy and looks at Aaron "besides even if she is, she hates me"

"What makes you say that?"

"Because I know Aaron, she hates me for leaving her. I don't blame her, she has every right to hate me." Hotch went to says something but Spencer cut him off "and look I know that she protected me on that video Morgan has already tried drilling that into me but that doesn't prove anything, all it says is that she doesn't want me dead and that's a pretty low standards if you ask me"

"Okay forget all of that then. If she really hated you. Why would she come to the work at the BAU? You think it's a coincidence that she just happened to come work in the same place, in the same unit as you?" Spencer looked at him thinking.

"She started here when I was on leave she probably thought I had left for good" Spencer's voice now softer.

"Why risk it? Why go work the one place your lives might overlap? She might be hurt by what happened between you. But she cares about and she wants you in her life." Spencer wanted to believe he was right so he did his best to smile at him.

"Thanks hotch" hotch places a hand on Spencer's back showing his support. "I'm gonna go see if they have any updates." Hotch nods as spencer gets up and walks off to the information desk.

When he came back the rest of the team were there waiting. Spencer couldn't help but smile at them as He took his seat again "no updates yet?" Morgan ask gently and Spencer shook his head.

"So, are you gonna fill us in?" JJ said with a light smile "is jessica really your daughter?"

"Can you not tell?" Morgan joked and they all chuckled a little.

Spencer smiled back at JJ "Yeah, yeah she is. And look guys I'm sorry for lying to you it's just that jes-"

"It's okay we get it" Emily jumped in.

"No it's not, I should have told you guys the moment I saw her again. Hell, I should have told you years ago" Spencer started.

"So why didn't you?" Morgan asked carefully, "you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to"

"No, it's fine, um- to tell you the truth... I was scared. I had a daughter when I was 20 years old and when I started at the BAU I knew it would be dangerous, I obviously didn't know it would be this dangerous but, um anyway. After her mom died, I did my best to look after her. Her grandmother, Sofia's mother would help me all she could, she watched her when we were on cases but then-" Spencer got a little choked up "then I got abducted by Tobias, do you guys remember?"
