"Are you ok? Is Ray getting heavy?" Klaus asks Stefan up ahead. I roll my eyes, not missing the mocking tone in his voice. He's only teasing him.
"I'm fine."
"You sure about that? We've been walking for quite some time now. Do you need some water or a little sit-down." I can hear the amusement in his voice.
"I don't hear you asking me that, and you claim to be a gentleman," I call to him.
He turns around and smirks at me. "It's because I know you'd have my head if I asked you that," he replies.
"True," I agree.
"You know, I get that we're stuck together... but if we could maybe just skip the chitchat, it'd be great," Stefan tells him.
"So much brooding. Your self-loathing is suffocating you, my friend."
"Maybe it's because I'm a little tired of hunting werewolves. We've been at it all summer."
"Thanks to our pal Ray, we've found ourselves a pack." I hear talking and movement up ahead and as I walk closer to the little clearing, I see them. Stefan walks into the middle and throws Ray down onto the ground.
"Ray! Oh, my God," a woman rushes over to him. "What's going on?" she whispers, then looks up at Stefan. "Who are you?"
"The important question is, who am I?" Klaus walks up beside Stefan. "Please, forgive the intrusion. My name is Klaus."
"You're the hybrid," the woman says, standing up.
"You've heard of me. Fantastic." Klaus goes to sit down on a big rock nearby, leaving them all trembling in fear and anticipation. Stefan sits down too. I lean on a tree behind them. "It's fascinating, actually. A werewolf who isn't beholden to the moon, a vampire who doesn't burn in the sun. A true hybrid."
I huff in annoyance and boredom. I really don't think I've ever met someone with as big an ego as him. Ray gasps, suddenly, coming back to life.
"Excellent timing, Ray," Klaus says as Ray continues to gasp and roll around on the ground. "Very dramatic," he adds.
"What's happening to me?" Ray asks.
"Klaus turns his head to Stefan. "Stefan?"
"Are any of you human?" Stefan asks standing up. "Your friend here needs human blood to complete his transition to vampire. If he doesn't get it, he will die."
"Doesn't take much. Just a sip. Anyone? A boyfriend, a girlfriend along for the ride," Klaus turns to one of the men standing around watching. "You," he says before biting into his arm. He throws him to Stefan and Stefan pins him to the ground.
"No!" the woman who went to check on Ray earlier shouts, trying to get to the man who is presumably her boyfriend. Klaus grabs her.
"If you don't drink it, Ray, I will. Problem is, I don't know how to stop," Stefan tells Ray, holding out the man's bloody arm.
"It's the new order, sweetheart. You join us or you die," Klaus says to the woman, holding her head.
"I'd rather die than be a vampire," the woman snarls.
"Wrong choice," Klaus bites into his wrist and then shoves it in her mouth, at the same time Ray grabs the man's arm and drinks from him.
"She'll thank me for that later," Klaus chuckles as he snaps the woman's neck and drops her to the ground. "Okay, who's next?" he looks around. I sigh and walk off into the trees. I need to get away for a breather while Klaus and Stefan force all of those werewolves to turn.
