The studio was alive with energy. The band had been there since the early morning, working on new material for their upcoming tour and album. The walls seemed to vibrate with the sound of guitars, drums, and harmonies as the guys bounced ideas off each other, refining lyrics and melodies. It was one of those days where everything just clicked.
Kendall and Logan were in the corner, scribbling down lyrics and experimenting with chord progressions. They were on a roll, finishing each other's sentences, and laughing at inside jokes that no one else in the room would understand. It was like they were tuned into the same frequency, effortlessly creating music that felt right. Kendall couldn't help but feel the warmth of Logan's presence beside him, the brush of his arm as they leaned in to look at the same sheet of music.
"Man, you two are like soulmates or something," Carlos teased, looking up from his drum kit with a grin.
"Yeah, seriously," James chimed in, plucking a bass line on his guitar. "It's like you're reading each other's minds."
Kendall felt a jolt at Carlos's words, his heart skipping a beat. He quickly covered up his reaction with a laugh, pulling Logan closer with an arm around his shoulders. "You know it! We're just that in sync," Kendall joked, trying to keep his tone light even as his heart raced.
Logan laughed along, his arm instinctively sliding around Kendall's waist for a moment before he pulled away to get back to his guitar. But something lingered in that brief touch, something that made Logan's heart beat a little faster, though he couldn't quite pinpoint why. He brushed it off, focusing instead on the music, but a seed of curiosity had been planted in his mind.
They continued jamming, the music flowing effortlessly as they layered harmonies and worked through different arrangements. The laughter and camaraderie filled the room, but Kendall couldn't shake the awareness of how naturally he and Logan fell into step with each other. Every time Logan looked his way, Kendall felt a mix of exhilaration and anxiety, his feelings swirling just beneath the surface.
Logan, on the other hand, found himself more attuned to Kendall than ever before. There was something in the way they were working together, an ease and connection that felt almost magnetic. He'd always admired Kendall's talent, but today it felt different, more intense. Every time Kendall grinned at him or brushed against his arm, Logan felt a spark, a pull he couldn't quite name.
As the afternoon wore on, the guys took a break, lounging around the studio and talking about their plans for the coming months. Carlos was the first to call it a day, saying he wanted to head home to be with Alexa and the kids. "You know, family time," he said with a smile as he packed up his drumsticks.
"Yeah, gotta keep the balance," Kendall replied, nodding as he twirled a pencil between his fingers, trying to ignore the flutter in his chest from earlier.
"Alright, I'm out too," James announced after a while, standing up and stretching. "Dinner with my mom tonight. I'll catch you guys tomorrow."
"See ya, man," Logan said, giving James a fist bump as he left.
"Later, guys," Kendall added, watching as Carlos and James disappeared out the door, leaving him and Logan alone in the studio.
The silence that followed was comfortable, but there was an undercurrent of something more, something neither of them could quite articulate. Kendall could feel the weight of unspoken words, the subtle glances that had passed between them throughout the day. It was as if the music they had been creating all day had formed a bridge between their hearts, one they were both hesitant to cross.
"So, you wanna go over that last chorus again?" Logan asked, breaking the silence as he picked up his guitar.
Kendall nodded, grateful for the distraction. "Yeah, let's do it. I think we're almost there."
They spent the next hour refining the chorus, perfecting the harmonies until they felt just right. The work kept Kendall's mind occupied, pushing down the confusing emotions that had surfaced throughout the day. But as they finally wrapped up, Kendall couldn't help but glance over at Logan, who was packing up his guitar with a contented smile on his face.
"Today was good," Logan said softly, his voice carrying a weight of meaning that neither of them fully understood yet.
"Yeah, it was," Kendall agreed, his heart swelling with a mix of pride and something deeper, something he was still trying to understand.
They walked out of the studio together, stepping into the cool evening air. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the parking lot. Kendall shoved his hands into his pockets, suddenly feeling the weight of what was about to happen next.
"So," Logan started, glancing over at Kendall with a small smile, "I guess this is goodbye for a bit."
"Yeah," Kendall nodded, the reality of it settling in. "Feels weird. We've been in each other's pockets for months."
Logan chuckled. "Yeah, but it's not forever. Just a few weeks. We'll all catch up somewhere in between, I'm sure."
Kendall smiled, though a part of him was reluctant to let Logan go, even if just for a short while. They had all agreed to take some time to focus on their solo projects after months of intense group work, but that didn't make the goodbye any easier.
"Make sure you don't forget about me while you're off doing your thing," Kendall joked, nudging Logan's shoulder playfully.
"As if I could," Logan shot back with a grin, his eyes lingering on Kendall's for just a moment longer than necessary. "You better not get too comfortable without me."
Kendall's smile softened. "Not a chance."
They stood there for a moment, neither of them wanting to be the first to walk away. Finally, Logan sighed and gave Kendall a quick hug, patting his back before pulling away. "See you soon, man."
"Yeah, see you soon," Kendall echoed, watching as Logan got into his car. He waited until Logan drove off before getting into his own car, his mind spinning with thoughts he couldn't quite pin down.
As he drove home, Kendall's mind was a whirl of emotions. He tried to push them aside, focusing on the fact that they had all agreed to catch up during their break. But deep down, he knew something was changing between him and Logan, something that couldn't be ignored for much longer.
For now, though, he'd let it simmer, letting the music and their friendship guide them until they were both ready to face whatever was happening between them.
