after texting estelle throughout the day as usual, he knew she had gone to eat dinner with her family before she was leaving for the train, so zach decided now was the chance to drive over to his friend's, meaning him and the girl could talk on the phone a little before she left.
grabbing the small bag he had packed for the weekend and his car keys, zach headed out to the kitchen of his family's home. smiling at his mother as he shared a simple greeting, "hey mom."
"hey zachy," she returned one, taking note of the bag in one hand, keys in the other and then glancing at his casual sweatpants and a random tee outfit. "where are you headed?"
"oh i'm gonna stay at jack's place."
"..isn't he away on tour? or is he back again?"
"no, he's still gone, i think they're in london, maybe... he gave me his keys and said i could use his studio while he's gone," he explained.
"okay then, well i can't wait to hear what you make, i'm looking forward to it-"
"actually to be honest, i'm probably not gonna make anything," he chuckled, politely interrupting his mother. "i'm inviting a girl around- they said that's fine. i just, i didn't want her coming here, i don't know where things are gonna go and didn't really want her meeting everyone now."
"okay," she nodded, not expecting the honesty since he'd be very vague about what he was going out to do lately. "well i hope- just stay safe zach."
"mom," he look directly at her and chuckled out; "i've been with girls, i know."
"and don't go leading her on.. even if it hurts her, be honest with her about not wanting something because i'm sure she'd appreciate the clarity, rather than trying to figure where she went wrong."
"yeah, okay," he nodded, sharing a small smile with her. "bye then."
"bye zach," she watched him started to wander in the direction of the garage, only to quickly turn back around.
"um.. she's not- she doesn't live very close to here and she's gonna stay the weekend so.. can we just keep things to emergencies?"
"yeah, of course."
"thank you. bye mom."
receiving another 'bye' in reply, he walked himself out to his car. chucking his bag onto the passenger seat then starting it up, putting his friend's address into the directions and starting the drive over.
and after almost an hour, zach had arrived. letting himself into their home, he wandered around for a moment, a little unsure on how to fill his time. sitting in the living room and ordering himself some food to be delivered before turning on the tv to find something to watch.
being interrupted by a call from estelle only shortly after, which resulting in the show being paused and him happily picking his phone up and answered; "hey phoenix."
"hi.. i just thought i'd call before we get on the train.."
"are you about to leave already? i thought you didn't till a little later?"
"we do, the train leaves at nine, but florence wanted to stop and get frozen yoghurt," she explained with a soft giggle. "but we're going to head over to the station in a moment because it's like forty minutes from her."
"oh okay. i have food on the way which should be here in a minute so perfect timing."
"and are you still good for five thirty?"
"yes," he quickly replied, pulling his phone away and switching it the call to speaker as he opened his clock app. "i'm setting my alarm now."
"for there to be time to drive to the station?"
"yes, essie," he chuckled, bringing his phone back up to his ear. "it's set for four forty-five and five just in case, okay? and it's like thirty minutes from here, i'll be there, okay."
"okay," she said with happiness clear in her tone.
"i'm excited to see you.. in the morning!"
"i'm excited.. i've been looking forward to this weekend."
"and i can't wait to finally kiss your pretty face."
"mh," she somewhat awkwardly hummed.
"well," he playfully laughed. "i think my food here, and i don't want you to miss your train so i'll let you go, okay?"
"yeah, okay."
"and i'll be there to pick you and your friends up, i promise ess."
"okay, thank you.. i'll see you in the morning."
"see you then, phoenix," he responded with a smile across his face.
