I'll Keep You Safe (Sonadow)

*Sonic's POV *
"So were the doctors able to find out what was wrong with Sage?" Amy asked as I plopped on the couch, feeling exhausted.

"No. She just falls asleep everywhere, most of the day, actually. I'm really worried." I said, the cushions muffling my voice. "And she's finally walking around by herself, she-" I looked to where I had left her playing with her plushy to see she wasn't there anymore.

I quickly sat up and looked around. "Sage? Has anyone seen Sage? Sage!" I heard her giggle as the front door opened.

"Hey." I dashed in her direction and saw Shadow picking her up as he walked in with Rouge. Sage started kicking and laughing in his arms, making me immediately relax. "You're  learning to run away from him. Smart choice." Shadow said to Sage, making me laugh and playfully roll my eyes.

"Don't turn her against me." I walked back to the couch. "You take care of her for now." I closed my eyes as soon as I knew Sage was in good hands.

"Sonic, I think I was able to find where -" I heard Tails making me quietly groan since I really just wanted a nap. "Oh hey guys."

"What did you find?" I asked.

"Right. I think I was finally able to find where Sage came from." My ears perked up, and I sat up. Everyone else remained quiet. "We were still trying to find her home, weren't we?"

"Yeah." I said quickly. "Yeah. Yeah, we were." I tried to calm down, but I was overwhelmed with pure sadness. "Erm. Where? Are you sure? Where?"

"That's the thing. She was dropped off at an orphanage 5 days before we found her. She's a year and a half years old. She wasn't given a name. She was just dropped off at the orphanage with no letter, no name, and no sign as to who her parents were. I called, and they said she had gone missing. Hear this. They won't take her back." Tails said, making me drop my ears.

"Why?" Shadow spoke up, making everyone look at him a bit surprise.

"They said, and I quote,'She's the devil. Keep her as far away from us.' I tried to push and ask, but they hung up on me." I looked at Sage, who was once again falling asleep on Shadow.

"The devil?" Amy asked.

"How could someone so tiny and cute cause someone to hate her?" Knuckles pointed out.

"I am not sure. I wish they would have told me what she did." Tails sighed.

"So what's going to happen to her?" Amy asked.

"My guess is Sonic is going to keep her." Blaze said.

"Well, I can't just -" I started but got interrupted.

"Sonic, you need to really think about this. Sage needs a proper home. Where she will be safe and happy." Silver said. "You alone can't take care of her."

"I can help." Everyone turned to look at Shadow. He cleared his throat and looked at Sage.

"Looks like Shadow can help." Rouge clapped her hands together with a smile. "Are you crazy?" She said to him. "Take care of a baby with your own rival?"

"It's the stupidest idea I've ever heard." Amy said.

"No. No, it's not. Shadow and I are finally not at each other's throats. And he seems as attached as I am to Sage. I can adopt her. Eggman wanted her for a reason. I can't just find someone to take her and leave her. Eggman will find her. She's safer with us. And think about it, if Shadow and I are working together. NOTHING will happen to her." I stood up and looked back at Shadow. "If you really mean it."

Shadow sighed and nodded but didn't stand up. Sage was sleeping in his arms he knew if he moved, she would wake up.

"So what? You two are dads now? What's going to happen when Eggman does attack? One of you is going to stay home and play house? Do you even know what this means? Will you two be roommates now to always have an eye on her?" Amy asked. I was getting annoyed.

"We still have a lot of talk about. But maybe. I don't know. We will make it work." I looked at Shadow. "Come on." He raised a brow. "Let's go to my house. We need to talk."

He stood up, Sage waking up as he did so and saw we were walking towards the door. "Bah bye~" Our ears perked up when we heard her.

"Were those?" Tails asked.

"Her first word!" I said as I walked closer to Shadow, who was looking down at her, clearly holding in a smile. "You're so cute!" I grabbed Shadow's wrist and dragged him outside. He remained quiet and didn't try to push me away, but he did chaos control us to my house and put Sage down.

*Shadow's POV *
My heart was beating rapidly. What the hell was I thinking?

I put Sage down and sat down on his couch as I waited for him to say something. I surely wasn't going to. I already found it ridiculously annoying that I had talked before I could even think. That little girl had a grip on me, I hated it.

"First of, I really am serious about this, Shadz." Sonic said as he walked closer and sat down on the floor, across from me where Sage was. He had baby proofed his house. All the corners had cushions to prevent her from hitting herself.

How come I had never noticed this side of him?

"I need to make sure you are too because I can see how close you are to her, and she really seems to like you too. I will do anything to keep her safe." He wouldn't stop smiling, making it impossible for me to think properly.

I was speechless, unsure of what to say until Sage stood up, grabbing the coffee table to keep balance. "Bah~!" I couldn't help but smile. She made it easier for me to finally talk.

"I'm serious. I don't want her leaving either." I said with a quiet sigh. "Are you actually planning on adopting her?"

"Yes. But there's a slight hicup." He rubbed the back of his neck, sheepishly smiling. 

"What?" I raised a brow.

"It's difficult to adopt when you're single." He confessed. "So we may need to fake a relationship."

My world stopped spinning.
