*Shadow's POV*
Another month passed, and Faker and I got approved to adopt Sage. We were officially parents, which felt strange. Thanks to all the lies and the fact he got a recommendation letter from his own mother, the queen, we got accepted.

"Shadow! Eggman is here!" My communicator turned on, and Sonic shouted. "He's trying to take Sage!"

"Rouge!" I shouted at her, but she was already flying towards me. I grabbed her hand, and chaos controlled us to Sonics house where he was hugging Sage and attacking some robots at the same time.

I got there just in time. Just when I appeared, Metal landed on the ground and was about to attack Sonic and Sage.

"You think you can take her away like that?" Eggman laughed over us as he watched his robots try to get to Sonic and Sage.

"Rouge!" I turned as I fought with Metal, trying to keep him away from them. Sonic was calling for her, and I didn't know why. "Take her. Keep her safe." He passed Sage to her even though she hesitated.

Sonic looked at me and nodded. I nodded back and jumped, then spin dashed back down using all my force to break Metal. Rouge managed to fly away, and before any bots could get to her, Sonic crushed them.

"We are not letting you take her. Ever!" Sonic shouted furiously. He dashed to me, then grabbed my hand and helped me spin dash Metal into finally breaking and falling. He let go immediately after.

I looked up to see Eggman as I charged a chaos spear and glared at him. I wasn't going to let him get any closer to her. "What do you want her for?!" I snapped.

"I have great plans for her." He laughed. "They seemed to be failing, but I guess they aren't." He laughed even louder. "I'll let you keep her for now. But I will be back. That kid is going to be the end of you, Sonic. Count on it." Eggman started to fly away, but I threw the spear in his direction, and his mobile started to malfunction. He fell somewhere in the forest.

"Are you okay?" He walked to me and checked for any injuries.

"You can not keep her." We both turned to see Rose running towards us with everyone else. Including Rouge and Sage, who I picked up once she got to us. I kept listening to the conversation as I checked her for any injuries.

"What are you talking about?" Sonic asked.

"Sonic! Eggman wants her for a reason! He just said she'd end up being the reason you die! You're too attached! The orphanage didn't even want her back. Why don't you get she's dangerous?" She tried to take Sage. "I already found someone who would take her. Give her here." I took a step back and growled at her. "Shadow, don't be stupid!"

Sage started crying, making both Sonic and I get even more protective over her. I hated the power this little girl had over me.

"I'll break your arm if you even dare touch her." I threatened.

"You better leave her alone, Ames. Shadow and I know well enough how to protect ourselves. Sage is not a threat." He stood in front of me as if protecting us. Everyone else just watched. "Risking our lives is part of the job. If you don't like it, then leave."

"Sonic! You can't possibly -" She was cut off by no longer the Sonic we knew but the prince version of him.

"If you disapprove of the risks we face, you may leave. But be assured, you will not take her, nor will you so much as gaze upon her. Do I make myself clear?" He stood up straight, for once making everyone look up at him in fear. "I said, Do I make myself clear?!" He snapped, making her ears go down, and her eyes started to tear up.

"Yes." She ran off, Silver and Blaze following right after her, leaving us with Knuckles, Miles, and Rouge.

"Don't you think you were a bit rough just now?" The echidna hesitated to ask. "She's your friend and is just worried about you."

"No. She needs to stop thinking she can try to change my life." Sonic growled. "And so do you. If you care so much, then go after her."

"Sonic, calm down. We are just worried about you. I'm happy Sage has you and Shadow, okay? But you really do need to think this through. We don't know anything about her." Miles tried to get closer, but Sonic slapped his hand away.

"She's a baby! There's nothing to know!" Sonic snapped yet again. "Leave us alone." He tried to calm down but failed. "Leave!" He shouted at his two friends. Rouge kept her arms crossed, clearly not liking the way Sonic was acting, but she flew off once I told her to.

"She's okay." I said and walked closer to him but kept Sage in my arms. "Let's go inside." He nodded as he remained quiet. He knew well I was not going to let him hold her until he calmed down.

"Chaos. I don't know what got over me." He laid on his couch and rubbed his face, slowly relaxing.

I walked to the kitchen and made some tea, Sage looking down at what I was doing, looking curious. I finally walked to Sonic after a while and told him to sit up. To my surprise, he did so without protesting, and I gave him the cup. He looked down at it, I could see him relax and slightly de stress about the situation as he took a sip and smelled the tea.

"Thank you." He sighed and looked at Sage, who I had put down on the floor now.

"Aren't you tired of all of this?" I decided to ask.

"Of what? Risking my life? Losing people? Being a hero? Being a prince? Being afraid all the time?" He asked with a chuckle. "Of course I am." He confessed.

"Then why do you continue?" I raised a brow as I sat on the couch beside him but kept my distance.

"Well." He smiled. "I learned that I shouldn't really complain about life. It surprises me every day. I mean, it surely has put me down many times, countless times, near death situations even. But it's never fully taken my smile. Life is tough, EXTREMELY hard, actually sometimes. But there's ALWAYS something to remind you why you do what you do. Whether it is the sunny sky." He looked out the window and looked up at the clouds. "Maybe a friend, others it's a cup of tea, and sometimes it's a simple smile from someone you care about." He looked at me. "There's always a reason to keep going."
