*Sonic's POV*
Shadow looked sick.

He looked like I had said something utterly disgusting that he may even need a doctor.

"Fake a relationship?" He finally spoke. Rubbing his face in clear annoyance.

"It's only for Sage." I said, trying to make sure he wouldn't kill me for this. I knew Shadow was trying his best to get along with me just now, but I hoped he'd drop all those negative feelings he has towards me to be able to keep Sage. "And the team wasn't wrong. We either become roommates, or we come up with a plan."

"We come up with a plan." Shadow said a little too fast, but I nodded. I'm not going to lie. Ever since Sally and Tails got that idea in my head, I have been looking at him differently.

The idea of faking a relationship with Shadow made my heart run faster than ever before, but I needed to. I hope, if Shadow is to ever find out, that he doesn't hate me or think I've tricked him in any way. I truly am just doing all of this for Sage. I don't care how many times I will get beat up by Shadow if it means I get to keep her.

"Right. Well, we will need a schedule once we get everything ready. If you really do want to do this, I mean." I asked, making him sigh. "What?"

"You make it very hard not to get mad at you. Stop asking if I want to do this, or I will change my mind." I laughed softly and nodded. "What's our first step?"

Shadow and I spent the day trying to plan out what we needed to do. Getting everything ready and making out a schedule for the two of us so we knew what to say and be prepared for when Eggman decided to attack. We still weren't entirely sure what to do if that were to happen. Somehow, we both felt very uneasy at the idea that he hadn't shown up yet ever since that day.

As the days passed, Shadow continued to show up at my house and spend time with Sage and I. He seemed very happy when she was around, so he would come by every morning to help with her and see her or even to just let me sleep a bit longer before he had to go to work.

"Tails texted me." I mumbled as I walked to the kitchen where Shadow was making breakfast while holding Sage.

I looked at him and couldn't help but stare. He looked so happy and comfortable around me now that I couldn't help it. It just felt so natural for us to be right here, right now.

"Hedgehog." Shadow snapped me out of my thoughts. "You're staring. What were you going to say?"

"Oh! Right. He found Eggmans location. He sent Rouge and Knuckles to investigate last night, and apparently, he's not even working on anything new. Maybe he's taking a break?" I said as I walked to him and picked up Sage.

"That doesn't sound like him." Shadow said as he focused on cooking. He'd basically made himself at home, which I was happy for. Each day, I realized just how big my crush was towards him, but I was very scared to say anything.

"I know. I need to go see for myself. Would you take care of Sage this afternoon?" I asked, but I knew it may be hard since he was preparing to go on a mission soon.

"No." He flatly said. "Just drop it. He's not attacking now. Why taunt him and make him come back for her?"

Oh, that's why.

"Well." I sighed as I walked to the couch and sat down. "I guess you're right. I don't want him to come for her." I looked at Sage, who was clapping her hand and trying to jump.

Shadow soon finished making breakfast and called me to the table. I put Sage down on her playpen and went to sit down with him. Suddenly I remembered something and walked to the kitchen.

"I got these for you!" I said as I grabbed a bag of coffee beans. "I got them from the castle. It's my mother's favorite roast, I thought you may like them." I walked back to him and gave it to him. "Though I don't see how you can like this, they're so bitter and disgusting."

Shadow looked down at the bag for a few seconds, then looked back up at me and nodded. "Thank you." He kept holding the bag as he looked at his food but soon stood up without even eating. "I should get going." He walked to the door.

"Hey, wait! Aren't you going to eat anything?" I asked as I turned on my chair, now sitting on my foot just so I could look at him.

"No." He grabbed the door knob.

"Wait! What's wrong?" I was clearly confused. Had I said something wrong? Was insulting his taste buds that bad that he had to leave? "I'm sorry if I offended you."

"You didn't, Hedgehog." He opened the door. "I'll see you later." He skated off.

I was suddenly hit with a wave of sadness as I watched him leave. Had I done something wrong? I kept questioning myself and replaying that conversation over and over again. I couldn't even get myself to eat either.

*Shadow's POV*
"What is that?" Rouge asked as I put the coffee bag in the middle of my desk and just stared at it.

"Coffee beans." I answered angrily.

"You got more?" She asked as she approached me. She was the only one in this world who I could not attack without getting killed. She knew that. She knew the power she had over me. "I thought you had plenty?"

"Someone gave it to me."

"So you're going to throw it away like all the gifts everyone else gives you?" She reached for the bag. "I could brew this now."

"No." I answered as I looked at my computer and started doing my work. "I'm keeping them."

He gave them to me after all.
