The next time they met, the team was back and ready to fight. The fox had tried to come up with something to help them shield from her powers, but he didn't have enough time before Sage attacked his lab, knowing well what he was planning. She had been surrounded by Eggmans robots but was able to see them without any problem.

"How does it feel to be right about something for once, Amy?" Sage said to the pink hedgehog who was swinging her hammer at the robots trying to break them enough to be able to get to Sage. "If Sonic and Shadow had listened to you and given me up, none of this would have happened."

"Don't listen to her! She's just trying to get a reaction out of you to control it!" Rouge shouted as she flew to her pink friend and landed beside her.

"Shut up!" The pink hedgehog shouted angrily as she hit Rouge with her hammer, making her fall back and get attacked while she was down. "I was right!"

"Rouge. I am sorry to hear you failed Shadow so horribly. I thought he was your best friend." Sage said softly while faking a pout. "Let's see what happens when he loses someone else." She smirked and made the robots disperse as she grabbed Amy's hammer and slammed it down on her stomach multiple times, making Rouge shout in pain.

"Stop!" Shadow shouted from the distance and chaps controlled in front of Sage, holding the hammer up before she could slam it back down on his best friend. "I don't want to fight you, Sage. Please stop. This isn't you." He pleaded his daughter. He couldn't go through with this. "I can't lose you too. You're my daughter."

"I am not. I never have been, Shadow. How does it feel to know you made the wrong choice? You should have saved Sonic." She grabbed a knife from her pocket and then stabbed his arm after she dropped the hammer to the side.

"I don't -" Shadow hissed and grabbed her wrist while looking at her. "I don't regret it." A tear rolled down his muzzle as he pulled the knife off his arm and let it fall to the ground. He held his arm in pain and then fell to his knees. "I would do it all over again." All the ebony one could feel was heartbreak. "I love you."

"Shut up!" Sage shouted with pure hatred. "You hate me! You neglected me! You lost Sonic because of me! You. NEVER. Loved me."

"That's not true." Her adoptive father said as he stood back up. Closing the distance between the two as he now held her shoulder with this uninjured arm. "I loved Sonic, I loved him with all my heart but we both raised you. I am not good with feelings, I lost the two people I cared about most in this world but I haven't lose it all. I still have you. Please come to your senses. I know you're not evil." The ebony one begged. "Bring back my daughter. I can't lose her too!" He shouted making Sage take a few steps back and look around at the chaos she had created.

Clenching her fists she realized she only had one way out of this. Defeating her own father. She raised her hand, holding out a weapon and pulled the trigger aiming at Shadow's head.

"Shadow! Move!" In a quick second, the ebony hedgehog was on the ground as his best friend, the one who pushed him, received the bullets.

"ROUGE!" Shadow shouted and quickly ran to her, checking her wounds.

"Shadow!" The twin tailed fox shouted as he flew to them and landed beside him and Rouge. "I'll take care of her. You deal with Sage. Go!" He shouted the last part when the hedgehog hesitated.

The ebony one didn't waste a second and skated to his daughter, kicking the weapon off her hands and pinning her to a tree. Tears were streaming down the hedgehogs muzzle as he furiously growled. He was angry, sad, heart broken. He was out of breathe, he felt like his whole world was collapsing and he couldn't do anything about it. He felt like he had failed Sonic.

"It's okay, Shadow." The illusion of his love one appeared behind Sage. "You're doing great." Sage was manipulating his emotions enough for him to be in so much pain to start seeing things.

"You're going to kill me now, dad?" Sage smirked. Anger and sadness were taking over him causing him to let go off his daughter and punch the tree roughly.

"I can't do this!" He shouted.

"You're weak!" Sage laughed, holding her stomach as she did so.

"I blamed you for his death for so long." Shadow started causing Sage to stop and look at him with hatred in her eyes. "I saved you instead of him."

"I knew it." She clicked her tongue and crossed her arms.

"But no matter how hurt I was, I knew it was not your fault. I blamed you because I needed a way to cope with the loss. But I loved you, I love you. I always have and will. You may not be my real daughter but I raised you, Sonic raised you and what you're doing is not something he would approve of." He met her eyes, his gaze was broken and looking nearly grey.

"I am putting an end to this now." He clenched his fists and kicked her back to the tree. It took everything he got to make himself hurt his own daughter. Summoning a chaos spear, Sage saw her life flash before her eyes. The consequences of her actions were finally catching up to her and just as she saw Shadow throw the spear, he said her final words.

"I love you too..."

[3 months later]
"Finally using the cane?" The twin tailed fox said to his friend when she walked inside beside Shadow.

"Just because Shadow insists I do until I am fully heal." The white bat said as she made her way to the couch and sat down.

"You're here too. How was your visit?" The pink hedgehog asked the ebony one as he sat beside his best friend.

"It was okay. She's still not talking." He spoke calmly. "Even though I visit her every day. She refuses to talk to me."

"She will eventually." Rouge spoke, he didn't hold any hatred towards the one who injured her. Neither did the rest of the group anymore. "But she will have to accept that's going to be her life from now on."

"I know." The hedgehog nodded as he looked to the distance, the image of Sonic waiting for him appeared in his head. "I need to go." The hedgehog quickly spoke and chaos controlled at his love ones tomb stone.

"You're here again." He could see Sonic waiting for him, sitting down on top of his stone while eating the chili dog the fox left him every day. "How is she?"

"She's going to be okay." Shadow spoke as he sat down on the grass looking up at Sonic.

Maybe it's was a way to cope with the loss, but Shadow never missed a day of visiting his grave just to see him even if his mind was just playing tricks on him. He was aware this wasn't the real Sonic but he was there nonetheless.

"What about you?" Sonic said as he stood up.

The question came to no surprise to the ebony one. He had spent the past few months trying to get better, learned to forgive his daughter, and accept what his future was going to bring without Sonic and even Sage.

"I think I'm finally ready." The ebony one said as he stood up, walking closer to his love one. "I will always love you."

The azure hero smiled, he placed a hand on his former rivals muzzle and leaned closer placing a kiss on the ebony muzzle. It may not have been real but Shadow could have sworn he felt a light breeze brush against that exact spot. A sign from Sonic.

"I will always love you too, Shadow." Were the last words spoken as he disappeared. The last time Shadow ever saw him.
