The following morning, I woke to the muffled sound of wood against carpet as my door swung open. Then soft footsteps that grew louder once they reached my bedroom.

A slight irritation crept into the back of my mind at the thought of someone just walking into my space as they pleased and fought the urge to just push them right back out. It would be the most immature thing I did since I got here, anyways.

Before whoever it was got any closer I pretended to yawn and shifted around under the covers.

The person stopped in front of my bed and seemed to inspect my sleeping figure.

"Get up, if you're awake. Wake up if you aren't."

I sighed, opening my eyes. "Good morning, Jerry."

"Go brush your teeth." was all he said, moving away from the bed.

Every day, at 9am on the dot (unless it was a weekend, then I'd be up at 10), Jerry would come into my room, shake me awake and get me ready for the day. He never put much effort into the morning routine since I was usually already awake, and also didn't need as much help brushing my teeth or tying my shoelaces, so as soon as he'd confirmed I was up and out of bed, he would wait in the living room, either texting or calling someone, occasionally taking a nap, rearranging my desk, or very rudely yelling at me to pick up the pace at regular intervals.

He was annoying, but never asked questions so the system worked for both of us.

I dragged myself out of the covers and sat against the headboard, not ready to get this day started just yet. I rested my eyes for a while, basking in the cozy darkness of the room which lasted not even five seconds before Jerry decided to flip the lights on very abruptly.

"Hey!" my hands flew up to shield my eyes. "I'm awake, what gives!?"

"I will not repeat myself. Get. Up." he ordered, ignoring my cries. "Breakfast starts in fifteen minutes so hop to it." With that he turned and left the room.

Not willing to obey him just yet, I slipped out of bed and tip toed across the floor to the toy box at the back of my closet. where I knew Jerry kept my phone, careful to avoid the gap in the door so he didn't spot me.

From here, I could see his slim frame leaning against my desk, chatting away with someone on a call. As usual. Good to know there was no point to my stealth.

Once I'd retrieved my phone, I went into the bathroom, keeping the lights off, before switching it on. I had missed calls from my Dad and several unread messages.

"I hope no one's died..." I muttered to myself as I read through them. The first ones I checked were from my cousin, Tyler, two days ago. He'd sent me a picture of the school lunch from WestHall which always looked like something straight out of purgatory.
