ALL LITTLES TO THE GARDEN FOR VISITING DAY
"It's time!!" I exclaimed, shooting up from my cafeteria seat like a rocket at the monotone voice. Jerry rolled his eyes, gathering my empty plates in a wooden tray to return to the kitchen. I had barely touched my fries, too busy with counting down the hours, minutes, and eventually seconds until those precious words would be announced.
"Finally!! I'm so excited, you guys!" Cecile cheered, clapping eagerly. "My brother, Charlie's coming and he's one of the alumni, so I'm sure the teachers will want to meet him!"
"Yawn." Rory interjected, tossing his uneaten sandwich onto Sid's plate. "Nobody cares."
"They so do!" she retorted. "Admit you're jealous, Rory."
Fareeda sighed in exasperation, standing and pulling her friend up with her. "Ignore him, CC. Let's get going." Their respective Residents took their hands, Jerry not bothering to, knowing I'd follow behind him, and we exited the cafeteria.
The halls were pretty crowded with other Littles on their way down and there was a contagious excitement in the air. As much as I would have liked to pick up the pace as well so we could get a good spot at the front where I'd see my dad immediately, I also knew that would never fly with Jerry, seeing as he had already been hurried from one class to the next, and when Lunchtime came, I didn't even wait for him and followed Demilade's RC to the dining hall instead so his patience with me was well tested.
Which I found secretly ironic, seeing as he did the exact same thing to me this morning.
Instead I settled for a regular speed, reluctantly aligning with his. He glanced behind, noticing me and nodding in approval. I groaned and rolled my eyes so far back in my head. I hated when he thought I was finally obeying him. Quietly, I slipped off to walk beside Fareeda, who was humming to herself and twisting a piece of her dark green hijab between her fingers. She always seemed to match her hijab with whatever color of sleeve she was wearing underneath her uniform, which was a nice touch. The shirt's sleeves stopped right above the elbow, but her dark green undershirt went way down to her palms. Sometimes her round face was the only part of her you could see.
"Hello." she said softly, smiling as I approached.
"Hey. Your parents coming?" I asked.
"Yeah, and my brother too." she replied, folding her arms. "He's a Caregiver in Training at a different school."
"Cool." Sid commented, coming up on her other side. "Are you gonna make him your official Caregiver when he graduates?"
"Oh, heck no." she scrunched her face up. "I would never trust my brother to look after me, even with the training. He's way too clumsy." Cecile chuckled at that from behind us which was ironic because she was incredibly clumsy. She once convinced some kids to let her join their football game, and after lining up for a free kick, she somehow managed to kick the ball backwards into another boy's face and he ended up in the Sick Bay with a broken nose and a mild concussion.
