Jo's P.O.V.
"Are you still thinking about my parents?" Brittany asked. We're in the garden having tea. The sun was setting so we decided to spend the afternoon outside.
"Well, yours and mine."
Her brows furrowed. "What do you mean?"
I sighed deeply before I answered her.
"I was just thinking, how different they are but yet the same."
I guess, what I said confused her more.
I gave her a small smile.
"Aren't you tired?" I asked her.
"No, you?"
I shook my head. "Two more days Brit, I'll be back to school, I'm excited. I might spend time with Reese to see what I have missed. I suggest you do the same with your minions, maybe they took notes for you or something."
She let out a soft laugh.
"So, you ready to talk to the principal?" She asked after a while.
I received an email from the school the other day, checking if I can meet the principal along some directors, I think, to talk about the accident and my scholarship.
And of course I said yes.
I want to know what will happen to my scholarship considering I won't be able to play till end of the school year.
I made Brittany promised that she won't interfere or use their connections about it.
"Yeah, I mean, I want to know my future in the school, the sooner the better..."
"I told you, I could just-"
"No, Brit. Okay?"
Brittany sighed. "Fine."
For the next two days, we have been arguing on where I should stay. She didn't want me to go back home as she was worried that I will be alone there or worst, my Mom comes over.
"I have been taking care of myself ever since I can remember, Brit."
We are already on the way to school.
"I know and I don't doubt it a bit that you can take care of yourself, what I'm saying is, you don't have to because I can take care of you, just at least when you're out of crutches."
I smiled at how she was so sweet about about the whole thing.
"How about you come to my house after school everyday and leave before... say, 10:00 PM?" I tried to compromise.
"But..."
"Brit... I'm gonna be fine, okay? I can't stay in your house till I'm out of crutches, that would take weeks, and that would be imposing."
"Impo- you're not, okay? I want you there and I'd feel at ease if you're with me all the time."
As a response, I chuckled at her.
She parked the car at the parking area of the school campus. There's not much car here yet as it's too early.
I have to come early for the meeting I will have with the principal and some of the board of directors of the school and Brittany insisted on driving me.
"Babe?" I called on her as we approached the admin office.
"Yeah?"
"Umm, can you wait for me somewhere else? Go to the cafeteria or in the car."
Brittany looked at me, obviously confused.
"Well..." I continued. "I just... I don't want them to see you with me in there, you know?"
"Like, my presence could influence them to be in your favor, is that what you mean?"
I was looking at Brittany, searching her face, she didn't seem offended. Instead, she gave me a small smile.
"Okay." Brittany said softly. "I'll wait in the cafeteria. Text me when you're done."
I reached for her hand and gave it a squeeze. "Thanks, Brit. It's not that I don't want you there... It's just something I need to do on my own."
She nodded, her smile a little sad but understanding. "I get it. Good luck."
I watched her walk away before taking a deep breath, clung on to my crutches and stepping into the admin office. The receptionist looked up and smiled.
"I'm here for the meeting with the principal." I said.
She nodded and led me to a small conference room where the principal and three board members were seated.
I sat down, feeling their eyes on me as they glanced at the stack of papers on the table - my records, medical reports, and more.
"We're here to discuss your situation." The principal began. "And how we can move forward while reviewing your scholarship."
I nodded.
"I understand, and I'm grateful for this chance. I know my injury means I can't contribute to the team this year, but I'm focused on doing well academically and staying involved in other ways."
The meeting was serious but fair. They asked about my recovery, my plans, and how I'd stay engaged with school activities. I answered as honestly as I could, hoping it was enough.
When it ended, the principal said they'd review everything and let me know soon.
I walked out and saw Brittany waiting by the entrance.
"How'd it go?" She asked as she took my arm and guided me to walk.
"Not bad." I said. "They're still deciding, but at least they heard what I have to say."
She smiled. "Come on, the food in the cafeteria is not good. There's this new pastry shop opened just right in front of the school."
