Brittany's P.O.V.
It's been months since Jo's accident, and honestly, she barely even uses her crutches anymore. She's stubborn like that.
Thanksgiving came and went, Christmas too, and now suddenly graduation is right around the corner.
If Jo and I weren't an official couple by now, I probably would've freaked out thinking our relationship is about to end.
We're basically together every day. She would stay over at my house sometimes or I would to hers.
Thankfully, her Mom is a no show during those months and it kept me wondering if she is well or not. It's not my place so I didn't mention it to Jo, plus, I could feel that it gives her peace, not seeing her mother.
Meanwhile, my girls and Hailey have been blowing up my phone, trying to hang out, and I've been dodging them left and right. I know they don't believe my excuses anymore. And the truth? I don't even care.
Well... except Gizelle. She's been giving me looks, and if you know Gizelle, you know that girl's brain is always cooking up something. And whatever it is? Yeah, I don't like it.
So today I decided to show up. Not because I miss them. Not because I feel guilty. Just to figure out what Gizelle's scheming.
I told Jo I was grabbing coffee with the girls after school, dropped her off, and headed to our usual spot.
The second I walk in, Gizelle practically yells, "Finally!" like I was hours late or something.
I roll my eyes—well, in my head, anyway.
Hailey lights up when she sees me. She scoots over and pats the seat next to her. The second I sit down, she leans in and whispers, "I missed you, you know." She said it low, but I'm sure everyone at the table heard.
"Yeah, sorry, I was busy," I say, trying to sound casual.
"Busy with Thompson? Isn't she healed already?" Gizelle asks, her voice all sharp and annoyed.
I let out a long sigh, more for myself than for them. "Yeah. She is."
"So?" Gizelle leans forward, eyes narrowed. "Is she hooked now? Did she say she loves you yet? Can you just leave her already?"
I look around the table, at all of them before my eyes settle back on Gizelle. "I don't know. Maybe."
"Maybe?" Gizelle practically explodes. "You've been playing nurse for months, Brittany. You're telling me you don't even know if she's fallen for you?"
Before I can snap back, Hailey takes my hand and squeezes it. "She has to be," she says softly. "The way she looks at you... that's how I look at you." She gives me this small smile, and I don't even know how to react to it.
Corine and Mina just sit there, watching quietly, not saying a word but both smiled when they heard what Hailey said.
I know that Hailey patiently waits for me, thinking that we are still together.
"Did I come here to talk about Thompson?" I tried to steady my voice though made it sharp just to make them feel that I was bored talking about Jo.
I don't want to talk about Jo with them, what we are and whatnot.
"Well, considering you did not spend time with us for months, we are thinking, we could go away this coming spring break. And no, Brittany, we are not taking no for an answer!" Gizelle took her coffee cup, sipped, placed it back onto the table and looked at me intently like she thinks I would be scared of her.
It's funny she'd think that.
"It's a month away, Gizelle. A lot of things could happen in a month," I said, trying to sound careless, like it didn't matter to me either way.
Gizelle smirked, crossing her arms. "Exactly. Which is why you need to say yes now. Secure your spot before you suddenly get too busy nursing Thompson back to full emotional health."
I rolled my eyes, but she wasn't wrong about the way she said busy.
Hailey leaned closer, still holding my hand. "Come on, Brit. It'll be fun. Just us again. Like before." Her voice was softer now, almost pleading.
"Yeah," Mina finally chimed in, her voice quiet but steady. "We haven't had a trip together since last summer. You've been... well, you've been somewhere else." She didn't say with Jo, but she didn't need to.
Corine nodded eagerly. "Yeah. Besides, we already started planning. We just need you to say yes."
I glanced around the table. All of them were staring at me, waiting for my answer, like I owed them something. I didn't.
Truth was, I didn't miss them. Not one bit. If it weren't for Gizelle's little schemes brewing behind those smug looks of hers, I wouldn't even be here. This wasn't about friendship. This was about keeping an eye on her.
I let out a long, fake sigh, dragging it out just to annoy them. "You guys are relentless, you know that?"
Gizelle's smirk only grew. "That's why you love us."
I shot her a look but didn't take the bait. Instead, I leaned back, arms crossed, and said the one thing they all wanted to hear.
"Fine. I'll go."
Hailey practically bounced in her seat, grinning from ear to ear. "Yay!"
Mina and Corine exchanged a quick smile, relieved.
And Gizelle? She just sat there, smug as ever, sipping her coffee like she'd just won.
I forced a smirk of my own
