Jo's P.OV.
The whole day consisted of kids staring at me like they were sorry about what happened to me.
Some even came up to me and said exactly it.
"Hey, so sorry about what happened."
"How are you feeling, Jo? So sorry about what happened."
"Hope you feel well, Jo. Sorry about what happened."
All day was like that.
Even my teachers said the same thing.
It was already after lunch. Brittany got detention after the last hour so Reese offered to take me home.
I have asked her to take me to the field instead and watch the practice.
It's too bad Rachel is sick today. I wanted to see her. She's called me several times, and several times, I missed them.
"You're torturing yourself." She said as soon as we were seated.
"I just wanted to see them."
My teammates arrived one by one and one by one, they came up to me and had to hear the same thing I'd been hearing all day.
"Hey." It was Hailey.
I saw her earlier today but she didn't utter any word but just now.
"How are you feeling?" She continued when I didn't greet her back.
My last moment at the field came flashing back.
What seemed to be a foot that I felt before I stumbled to the ground. Her, being near me when it happened.
How I think she had something to do with it but I was just dismissing the thought as I didn't want to accuse her without any evidence.
Because what if I'm wrong?
She's still friends with Brittany and even if I was jealous of her, I didn't want to create any animosity between them.
I forced a small smile, though my stomach churned. "I'm fine, Hailey. Thanks for asking."
Hailey shifted uncomfortably, her eyes darting toward the field. "It's good to see you here." She added, her tone a little too casual.
I didn't respond, just nodded. Reese glanced at me but didn't say anything.
The practice started, and I couldn't tear my eyes away. Watching my team run drills without me felt like a knife twisting in my chest. I wanted to be out there so badly.
"They miss you, you know." Reese said softly, leaning closer.
"Yeah." I muttered.
I noticed Hailey glancing at me from time to time, her expression unreadable. Was it guilt? Or something else? I couldn't shake the memory of that moment - the stumble, the fall, her being so close.
"Do you think..." I started but stopped myself.
Reese turned to me. "Do I think what?"
"Nothing." I shook my head. It wasn't worth it.
As I said, accusing Hailey would only make things worse, especially without proof. And if I was wrong? I couldn't risk that.
"I thought you went home." I was startled to hear Brittany. I didn't even notice her arrival.
"Were you sneaking up at me?" I joked at her.
"No, you were just too occupied and didn't hear me coming. Reese here saw me from a distance." She smiled at Reese and she reciprocated.
Brittany sat beside me. Not long after I heard her speak again.
"Shall we go?" She asked.
I looked at both of them.
I know they didn't want me watching the practice.
"Alright." I said finally, letting out a deep breath. "Let's go."
Brittany looked relieved, and Reese gave me a small smile.
As we walked back to the car, Brittany slipped her arm around me for support, her touch grounding me. "You made it through today." she said gently.
I nodded, feeling a mix of exhaustion and gratitude.
Reese opened the car door for me. "I'll see you tomorrow?"
I nodded at her. "Thank you, Reese. See you tomorrow."
"You okay?" Brittany asked as she started the car.
"Yeah." I replied softly. "What did you do and you earned detention?" I remembered asking her.
Whoever that teacher is, he or she got balls for detaining her.
"Umm... I better not say."
We were quiet the whole ride home.
I don't know what's on her mind but mine, it was Hailey.
I can't get her out of my head. My suspicion of her, it's eating me.
Should I tell Brittany? Would she have an open mind about it?
I know she loves me but she's still her friend, I'm not sure if she would believe me.
Wouldn't she?
