December 1stThere are days when raising a five-year-old daughter with my attitude can be fun, and then there are days like this, when her tantrums and constant crying can test my patience.
It was 7 PM, and Beyoncé and I were getting our things together to leave. She told me to pack an overnight bag because she wanted to take me uptown. Naturally, Amora wasn't happy about this.
Lauren had left this morning to head back to Queens, and we'd be staying here for another two weeks while they ran all the tests they needed. Afterward, we'd be going back to New York to wait for the results.
"Amora, you're not being a good girl right now," I said, glancing over at her.
She crossed her arms, crying even louder.
"What's wrong?"
"I-I want to go with you, Mommy," she sobbed, throwing her head back dramatically.
She must've picked that up from Beyoncé—definitely not me.
"We're only going to be gone overnight. When you wake up in the morning, we'll be right back. Don't you want to stay with Grandma T?" I asked, but she shook her head no.
Amora started kicking and screaming. Beyoncé was checking on one of her patients, so it was just me and Amora alone in her house.
I couldn't help but admire how beautiful and immaculate everything was. Beyoncé even had her own personal hair salon inside, calling her stylist over whenever she needed. The luxury was unreal.
I loved that for her.
"Amora Noelle, cut it out," I said firmly, watching as she cried even harder. She was working herself up, coughing and nearly gagging in the process.
"Mommy"
"You're going to make yourself throw up, baby. It's not that serious," I said softly, trying to calm her down. "Mommy wants to go out, but you know I will come back." She shook her head stubbornly.
"I'm scared, Mommy," she whispered, and that hit me. I immediately sat beside her, pulling her onto my lap as she sniffled, leaning into me.
"Why are you scared? Tell me."
She wiped her tear-streaked face and murmured, "My body shakes when I'm not with you. I don't want you to go."
I knew exactly what she meant. The last time she stayed with Mama Tina, she had a seizure, and even though the medicine had been controlling it since, I knew the experience still haunted her.
"My sweet baby, you're going to be fine. You have your medicine to help, and how about this... you can call me anytime, and I promise I'll answer, okay?" I offered, trying to reassure her.
