I leaned against the counter, balancing my phone between my shoulder and ear, trying to stifle a laugh. "I know, I know, I'm supposed to be on vacation," I giggled, "but I couldn't help it. I just really want to make sure this little girl's okay."
On the other end of the line, I could hear Mama and Solange both chuckling, and just as I was about to defend myself, Angie's voice chimed in playfully, "Or you just want to help the mama."
"Oop!" Mama and Solange said at the same time, laughing making me roll my eyes.
"Wait, what are you talking about?" I asked, raising an eyebrow as I looked around the room, hoping no one could overhear me.
Angie didn't let up. "Bey, come on. I saw the way you were looking at her at the restaurant... and don't get me started on my classroom."
My heart skipped a beat, and I fumbled for words.
"Uh... what? My nurse is calling me—I gotta go," I stammered, making up the excuse as I quickly hung up the phone.
I shook my head, chuckling to myself as I put the phone away. Angie always knew how to get under my skin.
I grabbed the chart from the nurse, ready to head out and check on Amora, but before I could take a step, someone blocked my way.
I looked up, and there stood Dr. Morgan, her face tight with irritation. She wasn't happy, and it showed.
"Who are you to steal my patient?" she snapped, folding her arms, eyes locked on me like I was some sort of threat.
"I didn't steal my patient from you," I said with a calm chuckle. "Her mother gave me consent."
Dr. Morgan's jaw tightened, and she clenched her fists at her sides.
"This has been my patient for three years," she said through gritted teeth, her frustration evident.
"And yet, you've gotten nowhere in those three years," I replied, locking eyes with her. "I'm here now. Thanks for trying, but I've got it from here."
Without waiting for her to respond, I turned on my heel and walked off, leaving her standing there fuming.
I could feel her eyes boring into the back of my head, but it didn't faze me. I was here for Amora, and that's what mattered.
I glanced at the chart in my hand, already focused on what I needed to do next. Dr. Morgan could be upset all she wanted, but the only thing on my mind was helping that little girl.
I walked back into Amora's room, smiling as I saw her sitting up, her energy seeming to pick up a bit. Nicki was nearby, but it was hard to miss how drained she looked.
